View Full Version : Niggles with XP2?

I adopted XP 2 right off the bat. So far everything has been alright. One thing I have noticed is an almost system wide slowdown. My Bluetooth mouse and keyboard take much longer to "wake up" compared to having SP1. On top of that, I can't install the software that allowed more control over them, although installing them prior to SP2 works. I get random hangs ( with 100% CPU utilization ) but can't seem to pin it down. I thought it might be a virus and did a cleanstall. Same thing happened, random hangs and a general feeling of sluggishness navigating through my computer. I haven't noticed a drop in game performance, but it feels like my computer has dropped down several notches with SP2.

more details if needed.
I know the feeling....i notice a few slow downs here and there (there are more services running...) but the biggest thing that I notice is that before I had NV Decoder...any folder that had mpeg movies in it would cause explorer to crash due to DEP. Now only AVI's do it..... You wouldn't have that problem since you're not running an athlon64 or an nvidia card (is this an nvidia prob?).....
I don't know what to tell you really. You might want to check out http://www.blackviper.com/ and see if you have any services running that you don't need to. Worse comes to worst just run SP1 with all the updates minus Sp2.

I'm using the bluetooth Optical desktop (mouse only though...), the software that came on the CD doesn't work, but the newest intellitype and intellipoint off microsoft.com work perfectly with it. Have you tried using those?
I haven't noticed any longer "wake up" times.
Hope you get it fixed.

I have not experienced any system slowdown with SP2.
As a matter of fact, my system seems more stable and performs a tab better.
You mentioned that you ran a virus scan, but you should check for spyware & adware.
A system slowdown is usually a sign of being "slammed".

No spyware, no virus. Even did a 2 new format/installs of XP SP2, still getting the same annoying "hangs" during normal operation. All the drivers are up to date, still not sure whats the deal..
My Keaboard and mouse thing is just weird too. Sometimes it picks up right away ( after a restart ) other times it takes 30 seconds worth of button clicking to get it to start working.

What BT mouse/keyboard do you have? I've experimented with Logitech's (MX900) and found their implementation to be pretty crappy on both the hardware and software fronts. Both JuiceZ and I ended up returning our BT gear and exchanging it for an MX510 and solid corded keyboard.

Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop for Bluetooth
Haven't had issues with it before, but if it keeps up I might be looking into a replacment.

Freedom Force (one of my fave old games) is broken in SP2. Its a known issue and Irrational says a patch is forthcoming.
