View Full Version : Typical core temperatures for 5900?

I have a gainward 5900 and it idles in the low 50s, under load I've seen it from 65-70. Is this in the normal range? I have it overclocked a bit to 425 core and 900 memory.

Mine idles at 38-39C. Not sure what load is. This is with it being flashed to 5950. I have pretty good cooling, plus Albatron put 3 fans on this particular 5900.

I do think you are pretty much in normal range so your temps shouldnt be a problem.

I'm running my 5900U @ 500/950 with factory cooling.
AMBIENT Temp: 32C
IDLE Temp: 40C
LOAD Temp: 60-70C

my pny 5900xt modded to Leadtek bios runs at idle of 36 then just out of an intense gaming session it rises to about 48......abient temp would be about 29 usually.

I've seen my 5900NU as high as 90C @ 525/1032. This is with full 8x AA and AF. Any card is going to run much hotter when overclocked so high and all the graphical options turned on. As long as you stay below the threshold (140C) it should be fine ;)

I would suppose your XT has passive ram cooling (i.e. no fan on ramsink)? 5900 Non-ultras or Ultras heatsink/fan will cover the memory too, so the load temps are going to read much higher because of the spreading of heat. On XT you won't get a readout of ram temps, and in some cases touching the ramsinks may even lead to a burnt finger. ouch!

Yer right...no heatsinks...just the fan/duct forcing the air outwards towards the ram...I was thinking of adding some heatsinks to the ram...as a mod...any ideas?ok I`ve found some where to get the heatsinks already..and attaching them is no prob..I don`t want any more fans in the case there are already enough making a noise like a jet aircraft.lol

I just purchased a used Asus V9950 FX5900 yesterday. The card seems to be running very hot. At idle it runs at 79C with ambient temp at 52C. When playing game it runs in the low 90's. I'm using the Asus driver for it.
Also in 3D Mark 05 I only scored 325 points. I was only getting less than 1fps in all the tests.
Games seem to be running fine though.

Any ideas what could be wrong with my card?

The fact that your ambient temp is at 52C, indicates that either, the inside of your case is too hot, or, the heatsink on your card is not making good contact with the GPU chip. Or maybe just the heatsinks fan is not running. ?

I took the heatsink off and put some thermal paste in it. It made a difference and now the card idles at 62C and games run at around 65C which is way better.
There's still something fishy about the card though. I'm playin NFS Underground 2 and the first time I tried the game I could run 1024x768 with everything on and it ran reasonably well.
I tried doing it now and i'm getting about 1 frame a second.
I also tried overclocking the card and running 3d mark, and it seems to be running slower when overclocked. I clocked it to 450 core and 900 memory.
what could be wrong?

btw, should i be using asus drivers or nvidia drivers?

Use Rivatuner's Hardware monitor to observe GPU and Memory speeds when running games that appear to be running slow. Because, it may just be your card is throttling back at your overclocked speeds ??

Also, for drivers, you should be trying the latest Nvidia as they become available, if only because of bug fixes. Drivers from Manufactureres sites always lag a long way behind, and are therefore always out of date with what Nvidia has released !

lol people have been doing this ever since the 5950 came out. the 5950 is a tiny bit better card, but thats all. it has slightly faster gpu and memory (the core has been redesigned, and the ram is 2.0ns instead of 2.2ns). but the benefits of flashing a 5900 to a 5950 are still very great. i should know, i did it myself.

some advantages are 1) my benchmark scores and gaming performance are pretty much in line with those that own real 5950 ultras 2) the bios allows for higher overclocks 3) cooler temps 4) better graphics

the only disadvantage is if you flash the wrong card (i.e. 5900xt) with 5950 clock speeds it could fry the memory.

For all that matters, it is totally bios based. So all you need to do is flash your FX5900ultra card with a 5950u bios ----> and in your case try the Leadtek A380 bios first !

However, if you want best performance for your card, then you must also change memory Timing/Latency values in whatever bios you decide to use !

Things you will need;

1) BIOS ROM File - Leadtek A380U (5950U)
2) BIOS Editor - NiBiTor 1.8
3) Flash Utility - WFFlash 5.6
4) MS-DOS Bootdisk --> www.bootdisk.com

I just experienced similar problems with my ASUS 5900 card and I flashed it last night to a 5950.
Lower temps and higher benchmarks for certain (I'm on campus now. If you want details on what I did I can post them tonite, or you can email me).

It was scary but worth it. I have all the files you need (including my own backup .rom, but you will want to get your own).

Look around on the web and get a GOOD understanding of this process BEFORE you start. I had a backup card handy just in case. You should too.

The one thing I have had problems with is overclocking.
Both before the bios flash and after I get slooooow frame rates if I use coolbits.

I'm happy with the temps going down but just curious if anyone knows more.
