View Full Version : System crash if drawing a selection rectangle on desktop

When logged in gnome2 if I try to draw a simple selection rectangle on the
desktop (without including any icon or applets under the selection
rectangle) , causes a critical crash. No way to exit from X, no
combinations of keys is possible. The only thing I can do is to completely
reset the PC by the button on the pc-case. I found that it also depends on
the speed I use to draw the rectangle and it's also affected by the
rectangle dimension.
Anyone had similar problems or knows what should be the cause?

Have you tried Ctrl-Alt Backspace to restart the X server?

Failing that, you could remotely log into it to see if this system is still running...

Unfortunately Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does'n work, everything is freeze, keyboard too. And I can't remotely log from anywhere !

I dont think it has much to do with just drawing rectangels, and so forth. X works perfectly for me. until today.

Old system:
1ghz amd
30 gb hd,
512 pc2100
e-geforce 2 mx200 32 ram (agp)

New system:
cpu = same
hd = same
ram = same
e-geforce 4 mx440 64 ram ddr (agp)

Now, i didnt change anything but the vid card. Yesterday when i had my gforce2 on everything worked. i got a new card today. i un installed the drivers and re installed them, and boom, nothing seemed to work. i could load up X and it ran fine. (still getting low fps btw) but when i load up quake3 my system reboots. basicly im having the same problem. i also updated my XFree86 thinking hey mybe X is crashing the hole system. No good, updated today and its still not working. If anyone has any ideas on what could be going on here. or a Step both me and this guy have missed could u please let us know.
