Which should I use? I don't recall ever seeing anyone here with the 8xS setting, but it seems, from nVIDIA's description, if offers better image quality than 4x...so should I use 4x or 8xS?

8xS always makes the text look really fuzzy in my games so I htought it was fudged or something.

Try 8xS, if it causes too much of a performance hit, go to 4x.

Well, I've been using 8xS, but I've just never seen anyone else using it so I was wondering if there was some reason not to.

The reason is the performance hit.

I always turn it on in older games because it's much better than 4x

I find 8xS to be very nice. I can play all my games (CS:S, Gothic II, NFS 2) @ 1024x768, max. Details and 8xS and I'm very happy :)

I put it at 8xS...dunno if that's overriding the CS:S 6x, but I bumped AS to 16x in both CS:S and the drivers...and CS:S still runs like a dream. That game is so pretty! I can't wait to see HL2!

Right :) If there weren't those lags in CS:S I would probably play it the whole day ;)

What res are you playing at? Only way for me to get respectable frames with using 8xS/16xAF was to drop the resolution to 1024x768 and even then it dropped significantly during combat... Maybe 30 - 60FPS is your dream but I rather play at 1600x1200 & 4xAA/8xAA. Looks better also.

VST: 84fps (1024x768, max. details, 8xS, 8:1, quality - all optimizations off)
Ingame: Between 60-120 fps, completely smooth.

my resolution is 1280x1024 and that's the max for my monitor

6xS looks better...

nV has messed up the 8xS mode. Jaggy as heck (for lack of a better word). It used to look 10x better in older drivers.

8xS works great in 61.77 drivers.... for me anyway.

I don't have any option for 6x

*note - you will need to edit Rivatuner.cfg to get all the AA modes seen above (thanks to ChrisRay for this tweak).

so I should use 6x over 8xS, eh? What about the new and old 8x?

I didn't say it doesn't work. I said it doesn't work like it used to. ChrisRay has already done studies on this. 8xS is not much better (if any) than 4xS

6xS provides the best quality in Direct3D (at least for FX cards). The "old 8x" used to be the best AA mode for FX cards, but now it is broken. "New 8x" refers to 8xS, which like I say is comparable to 4xS in the newer drivers :lame:

ahh, okay...so 6x, or 6xS?

Quality wise, 6xS and 16x OGSS are the best. Performance wise, 4x RGMS is the best.

8xS just stinks . period

nV should put all these modes in the control panel. I have no idea why they cut some of them out.

2x
2xQ
4x
4xS
6x
6xS
8x (the old one that 5x.xx drivers used)
16x

Don't know about you, but it would sure make me happier... Instead all we get is

2x
2xQ
4x
8xS (crud)

nV should really do something about that. I'm almost ready to program my own tray icon because of it. This is rediculous...

So is 6xS slower than 8xS? And I guess they don't "release" those other AA modes because they are Direct3D-only...

Whenever graphics look better it does become more demanding, so Yes it will be slower. And I do believe most of those modes work in OpenGL as well.
