Well, there are a multitude of different reasons you could be getting that message. First and foremost, did you do the config file editing that is required, as laid out in the README? If so, did you check to make sure the NVdriver kernel module was loaded (lsmod should list it)?

You could also just post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file, as that will contain a more descriptive error message than the one you've posted...
