Some of you will undoubtedly be ashamed that I bought a prebuilt system from Compaq (X-Gaming model basically as seen here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/compaq-x.html) minus the case window), but here are it's specs (brackets contain lowest Pricewatch Prices):

Coolermaster Wavemaster Case [$169]
Enermax 470W PS (Noise Taker) [$80]
Athlon 64 3800+ [$608]
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum [$129]
2 WD 74GB Raptors (Raid 0) [$324]
1GB PC3200 (will prob swap in my 1GB Kingston HyperX PC3500) [$212]
GF 6800 Ultra 256MB [$459]
Audigy 2 ZS [$71]
9-in-1 media card reader [$5]
Double Layer 16x DVD+/-R/RW [$64]
56K modem (just in case of DSL downtime :) ) [$5]
Win XP Pro w/ SP2 [$85]

The total price was $2178 with free shipping, so I don't think I did too bad after pricing all the parts seperately at Pricewatch ($2211 total price). I will most likely have to do some tweaking and interior cabling modifications. Anyway, I will post benchmarks and pics once the system arrives in a couple weeks.

Edit: Added latest and cheapest Pricewatch prices for the parts. I think I got a pretty smokin' deal actually.

My system (which is really new still). is also been equipped with a GF6800GT.. ;)

you can expect to hit 12k~13k 3dmark03 @ stock speeds (which is insane).

my specs:

Main Rig:
AMD Athlon64 3500+ skt 939 @ 2.3 Ghz
2x512MB Crucial PC3200 DDR RAM
160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9
250GB WD2500JB
2x 17" CRT Screens (1024x768x85Hz)
AOpen Geforce 6800 GT @ 400/1150*
Asus A8V MoBo
Logitech Desktop Pro
Logitech MX700 Optical Mouse
40x12x48 CD-RW
4x DVD-/+RW (NEC1300A)
Fujifilm S5000
HP Photosmart 7760
Pinnacle PCTV Pro
Canon FB630U
Chieftec Matrix Black USB
Windows XP Pro SP2

and it scores 12160 pts in 3Dmark03
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3354482

the AMD64 is also a awesome processor..

*) the 400/1150 has to be set everytime I boot or change a setting in the nvidia driver panel. still trying to figure out what causes the problem. I have a topic running in the Forceware subforum about this..

About that PSU you ordered? I hope it is a good one.. since I have the same on order too.. my GF6800GT needs juice.. lot's of juice. I am thinking it holds back it's potential @ 400Mhz core (since it autodetects @ 398!!)..

Everyone keeps saying that. And I really want to buy one. But I keep seeing scores like that and wondering if I should bother.

Here's my 3dmark03 with my crappy Athlon XP:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=3320904

And I can probably get it higher if I really try. Since then I have put some new memory in and can run at 10x250. I think 13000+ is probably achievable.

I'd really really like to buy an A64, but I would be mighty disappointed if I spend say Ł300 on a board, CPU, heatink and fan - only to find its no faster than what I have.

I didn't choose the PSU, this is what Compaq ships with their X Gaming PCs.

Good system mate, fire up HL2 already! :ORDER:

Wow, that compaq actually is made up of standard parts, even the case is a coolermaster.

Why on earth is it a "Compaq" anyway? The last time I saw a compaq it had everything integrated on an unknown mobo propertiary solution, was nearly impossible to upgrade using standard parts and was completely out of date the moment it hit the shops. Compaq has come a long way since I see :)

I built mine myself and i use the same motherboard. It's the best S939 around right now.
Your compaq may be prebuilt but it's a great gaming machine for sure.

Nice rig, however, you could have saved a TON of cash either building it yourself or BUYING an Alienware, especially since they are offering a $500 mail in rebate. I had priced out a system with the exact same specs you listed a few days ago, and the cost was $1360(thats including the $500 rebate) so even without the rebate, it would have cost you 1800.

It's not much better on A64's, mine drops into the 30's numerous times as well, if I turn optimizations off. With opts on framerates are even in shader-heavy areas but lots of texture crawling thanks to texture stage opts. That's all video-card related anyway. Then again, with your awesome O/C on that Ultra, you really shouldn't be going to 30fps...maybe an A64 IS for you ;)

I don't know how you came up with this exact system for $1360 because I priced all the parts on Pricewatch before I took the plunge. Also, I configured dozens of rigs at Alienware's website over the past few weeks, and none of them came close to this one even with the $500 dollar rebate. Also, the $500 rebate for the Aurora system is expired, it's $300 now. Currently, their base system is $1249, which only includes a 3500+, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9550SE, and an 80GB Seagate drive, and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive. Anyway here is an identically configured system (except for the few freebie items) from Alienware cut and pasted:

[1] Aurora™

This totaled $2832 with the $300 mail-in rebate. You can try it out yourself if you would like. ;) So, I am going to stick by my purchase. Alienware almost had me as a buyer, but then their $500 rebate disappeared for a few days, so I looked elsewhere. :)

I ordered the zd7000 laptop in Oct. and it only took about 8 days from build to my door. Also they always ship 2 days.

I feel the same way jakUp.

Seeing how sorry Intels rigs are right
now in gaming I guess I'll be going with a 64.

Our 3Ghz+ rigs will be ok for at least 12 more months.
I have not made up my mind yet but I might wait till
spring and see how things are looking then.
I really need to go ahead and buy a new case.
That will be over 300 for that. "PC2-650BK Koolance"
Plus I would need new memory the mobo and cpu.
I'm looking at almost a grand to upgrade.
So I'm going to get my new case first and
then work on the rest. ;)
I hope to order my new case in about 2 weeks. :D :D :D :nanahump:

Id have to take issue with your statement that Intel rigs are so sorry right now. Thats quite a bit of an exageration. Intel rigs play all the games just fine. Yes, AMD's are faster in most games, but generally not by some astronomical measure. A few fps yes, but Intel is by no means sorry for gaming.

Intels play agmes just fine that's true. The price you have topay for an intel rig is friggin ridiculous though. My 148 bucks CPU is running at 2.6ghz. Not even the bets most expensive Intel P4 EE can come close to that performance after you OC it.

Those who have P4s right now are fine but those who buy one now for gaming.... :lol2:

You lucky SOB! :argh:

Mine has not shipped yet. I wonder if it has to do with the 2 Raptor drives. That's the only significant difference between yours and mine.

I guess I can wait a little longer.
