any benefit to do this? or is the quadro mainly geared towards graphic apps?

You will get a huge increase in preformance with the quadro drivers in workstation apps, like CAD and 3d art stuff.

This is bogus. Smoke and mirrors. No matter what a bios claims, no matter what the straps on a motherboard indicate, a GeForce GPU can not be made into a Quadro GPU once it's packaged. These hacks are effective for fooling the driver, but they can't get true Quadro performance from the GPU.
There are different bonding options on a GeForce and Quadro GPUs. They cannot be be changed after the die is packaged.
Although early in a product's lifecycle, nVidia might decide to have the Geforce/Quadro switch outside of the package in order to manage inventory better. This way, they can just order 1 million chips from the packaging company instead of 990000 Geforce 6800 and 10000 Quadro and have a lot of Quadros sitting unused.
If I were nVidia, I would do a one-time fuse that's blowable from software.
