6800gt owners plz post the fps and settings you are getting in hl2. Cause all these hl2 benchmarks are swaying my decision on buying a 6800gt.

Buy a X800pro...its faster then the GT

Im sorry but this is a stupid post. What timedemo/benchmark are you talking about? If you want a comparison go to any major hardware website ( www.anandtech.com , www.hardocp.com , or www.firingsquad.com ). Over all the X800 pro has a small advantage but this game is very VERY CPU limited. I have an Athlon XP (Barton) @ 2.5Ghz and get the same FPS @ 1600x1200 as I do @ 1024x768.

With my 6800NU modded to 16 pixel pipelines I get over 70fps when the CPU is not stressed so both cards are fast enough to play @ 1600x1200 4xAA w/ 16xAF if your CPU is up to the task.

Xplode, that's a little vague. The X800 pro is a little faster in Half-Life 2 but slower in everything else.

I hope your being sarcastic, the GT wins in atleast 80% of the games out there I just dont see the point in recomending the pro for one game / single player game at that.

Dont get me wrong I love my modded VIVO but the GT is the bang for the buck champ.

Anzak how do you display the FPS in HL2

Man, this is stupid: They are as close to each other as they have never been before. You shouldn't care about it, take the card you can get. The GT is faster in Doom3 and the X800Pro is faster in HL²...So what?

Not yet again this argument....

Don't agree, that XT Pro is faster...
I got Leadtek 6800 GT, running on stock speeds, on Intel platform... 1280x960 @ 100Hz, AAx4, AFx4, IQ-default (high) everythink runs smooth. I decide to buy nVidia card, beacouse my previous 9800 Pro was really killing me (i mean - drivers for it) I'm really satisfy with my new card. There is no diffrens if the fps is over 30, i think, but anyway You should watch how many games got nVidia logo inside. Becouse if i remember its only RavenShield from Ubi got Ati recomendation :(

And also use the search function on these forums. This stuff is being talked about to death on the Web. It's all there provided you know where to look.

You do realize that this is only marketing BS right? Whoever ponies up the most $$$ gets their logo on the game, doesn't make a tiff of difference. In games like Painkiller and UT2004, I get better overall performance on my X800 than I did on my 6800 and those are "NVIDIA logo" games.

Put
cl_showfps 1

Into the command line which has to be unlocked under the controls. :lame:

Peacemaker I would have to respectfully disagree, IHVs logo on the intro has nothing to do with how a game will preform on there hardware.

thanks anzak.

I have a GT (400/1100). I haven't done the ST or tracked fps, because I've been busy actually playing the game. What I can tell you is that I've been playing at 1600x1200 w/4xAA & 8xAF, all ingame options maxed, and have been amazed at how well it performs. No stuttering, no severe fps dips, no problems whatsoever, even in huge outdoor scenes with multiple enemies, helicopters, etc.. So based on my own experience, half those benchmarks are pure bullsh*t.

The X800 might win by a tiny margin in some cases in HL2, but it gets whipped by the GT in most other games. So in my opinion, the GT is certainly the better buy.

Yes, but fps is not everything, You know?

In my opinion, everyone has own mind (including Google :) ), and should decide for Your selfs. I choose nVidia this time and just like i said - i'm really satisfy with it :)

My last card was a 6800 Ultra and in OpenGL, it was much faster than my X800 Pro (obviously). But in D3D, while the 6800 is faster on average, the X800's minimum frame rates don't drop as low. Case and point - Far Cry, some levels would have the 6800 dropping to 30 fps, my X800 never goes below 40 but at its highs it never really gets higher than 70-80 while the 6800 can break 90-100 no sweat.

Personally, minimum fps is more important to me than overall average.

Yay, both are almost EXACTLY the same...

I hae a 6800 GT just because I've used nVidia for a long time, and know their drivers better.

Ok So let make it a serious Benchmark then hey.

Download this Demo - http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5857

Put into this folder.
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\someone@hotmail.com\ha lf-life 2\hl2

Then type timedemo "demo-name" in Console.

You have to enable console under Advanced settings in Keyboard Settings.

It is the Canals Demo from the HardOCP review of 6800GT and x800 Proformance.

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjkyLDE=

When I run in 1024x768 or Higher I get about a 80FPS from the timedemo everytime. Hell I get 80FPS weither I have 0x AA and AF or 16x AA and AF. Also Image Quality settings have NO effect at all. So I am very CPU limited. :)

But there ya go. A Straight forward benchmark. EVERYONE GO AND DO IT. Only takes 10mins.

Ok I ran this at 1280x1024 everything maxed with 4xAA and 8xAF vsync off and quality settings in the driver control panel. I got 64.91 fps. I then set AA to trilinear and AF to none and ran it again and got the same score again so just like you it looks like I am cpu limited but the game plays pretty darn good doesn't it?

Here are the results from my runs:
canals01.dem: 51.2 fps (2.601 variability)
coast03.dem: 51.7 fps (2.71 variability)
This was at 1280x1024, 2x AA, 4x ani, Vsync enabled and everything else on high.

Considering my cpu, do these numbers look about right? Watching the demo, it looked jerkier than when I'm playing the game, especially the parts where other characters are talking, etc. Not sure what was up with that...

Also, with Vsync enabled and a 60 hz monitor, shouldn't I only be seeing 60's and 30's for fps? When I do a "cl_showfps 1" it varies all over the place...

They look about right. You should run it again on lowest settings and see if that improves your score. I am willing to bet it wont and you are CPU limited. Which means everyone needs to get out there and work on Overclocking their CPU. Also my GT is at 400/1100, and my CPU is at 3.15ghz. This is why I get 80fps.

lol, I completely missed this before.

YOU CANT RUN A BENCHMARK WITH VSYNC ON. It doesnt allow your FPS to go over your monitors Refresh rate so your cards Average would be much higher then this. No, it will not be 60s and 30s. Just the Max is 60. So your Card will never put out more then 60.

So run the benchmark again with Vsync OFF and I am sure you will get a higher Score. Maybe not alot, but you will.

GT can run hl2 good
X800pro can run hl2 good

Money on either is money well spent

but woudlnt u rather have a card that actually has a cooling solution for more than half of the memory?

Seriously i love the way ATi brags about how small of a package their card is compared to nvidias solution, when half of their memory is ghetto rigged onto the back of their card with absoulutely no cooling whatsoever... GJ ATi well worth the 400 bux ur askin, btw dont worry about the full shelves of x800pros sitting at circuit city next to the empty nvidia shelf, im sure they will sell eventually.

I dont use timedemos to measure my performance in HL2 .. instead i simply run the game at the first menu scene & check my framerate there .
i know it dosent represent actual gameplay , but its a good indication for the performance .

on my 6800 PC (on my sig) @1600x1200,4xAA,8xAF :
6800GT@U = 40fps

that 40fps at least ensured me a smooth gameplay along the whole game except with some occasional slowdowns in the last levels in C17 streets where you fight with the resistance .

so i guess 40+ fps in the first menu scene & more will be enough to play without worries .

I ran the Canal timedemo with the following settings, using 66.93 drivers, 6800GT at stock speeds.

Model Detail: High
Texture Detail: High
Water Detail: Reflect World
Shadow Detail: High
Antialising: None
Filter: 8X Anistropic
Shader Detail: High
Vsync: Off

1024x768 91.01FPS
1280x960 90.39FPS

Also ran it with same settings as above except enabled 4X FSAA
1280x960 88.48FPS

Looks like HL2 is very CPU limited, Runs great on this PC tho ;)

If I'm not mistaken there isn't any money exchanged in "The way it’s meant to be played™” program. I listened to the last conference call and I believe that was one of the questions asked. It's program that ensures that that game will play well on nVidia hardware.
