Not bad at all except the video card

I would suggest a 6800 (non Ultra) or a 6800GT instead of a 6600GT
if he plays a lot of games (like HL2 or Doom3 etc)

Or he can buy at least a X800pro

Looks to kick some butt :D

Yeah 6800GT or X800XT would be a better/faster choice. :)

But nice otherwise.

Seems like fine choices :)

Looks good with one exception, the memory. 1 gig is the minimum for a gaming rig IMO.

You could drop the CPU down to a 3000+ and overclock it to 3500+ levels, which would be possible with a decent aftermarket heatsink. Then use the money you save to increase the memory to 1 GB and/or swap the video card out for a 6800NU, 6800 GT or X800 Pro VIVO (to mod to 16 pipelines). But you're definitely going to want to increase the amount of memory. Games will starve without it.

Hes not a "serious" gamer. He plays games no matter how they look (setting, resolution) and he doesnt care about AA or AF. Hes only in 8th grade and really doesnt know much about PC's but his mom is buying him a new one as a gift...i really dont think he will tell teh diff with an OCed AMD64 or 6600GT or 6800 GT as he isnt looking to enable AA or AF or play at 1600x1200 and such. :) But thanks anyway!

The graphics card is fine IMHO. But even at low resolution games will be choppy with 512mb of memory. I cannot stand playing FarCry on my friends rig because of the memory. If anything throw in a stick of 256 to bring it up to 768.

HDD = Wesetern Digital 160 Gig - $93

That hard drive is not acceptable, you should only buy a hard drive with at least an 8mb cache.

or

or if you wanna consider SATA which is a tiny bit faster

Don't you think thats going a bit overboard? I have that hard drive (WD Protege) and yes it is slow but this is being built for an 8th grader. Do you really think he is going to notice if it's sluggish?

Yes, "unacceptable" was a bad word to use, but it's a matter of a few dollars for 8mb cache vs 2mb cache. There is no reason to remotely consider the 2mb cache with that little of a price difference. Hence I jumped on that ;)

Everything is Fine. But I agree with original suggestions. Drop the CPU Speed back and get him another 512 megs of memory. He will be very thankful you did it for him.

I would get 1GB pc3200 ram and a 6800GT, and maybe instead of a 3500+ I'd get a 3200+.

I agree... Geil is great memory. I love mine. :)

Looks nice, just drop down the CPU and get 1GB of memory.

Well guys, i took some of your advice and went for this setup!

AMD64 3200+
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
1 GIG Kingston PC3200 RAM
Apollo Geforce 6800LE
160 Gig HD

It runs super smooth! I was really impressed by the performance of the 6800LE (although it doesnt out perform my GT OC ;)) Thanks for helping out! He loves his PC. HL2, UT2004, FarCry, Doom 3 all run GREAT! :)
