The video slows down, then speeds up, then slows down again, then speeds up again, and so on.

Don't .avis have a high bit-rate through-put; it makes me think defrag.

nothing in the background hogging CPU?
I get that when i browse the web with FireFox and running video at the same time.. only slows down and speeds up to catch up when i click links and it loads.
sound isnt affected..

maybe you got some mighty wickid process nipping CPU then and then?

download the latest codec pack for that AVI ( Install Matroska Full install pack, it as all the codecs you will ever need). the audio could have timing issues with the current codects you have. Installing the latest audio drivers would also help.

BTW, when you install Matroska Pack you have to use the old Mplayer 2 (found in the windows media player folder). Because Winows Media Player 7 and beyond crash with it installed.
