the one difference being this. nforce2 thrives on CPUs with a 333FSB. none have been available till now. nforce2 performance with 266FSB is "only" that of a KT333 or so.

True enough. ;) But late is late, no matter how you try to candycoat it.

so nvidia really had no good reason not to wait until the CPUs were ready for nforce2. nforce2 was made for the new tbreds.

Your logic works the other way too... They really had no good reason to announce it so far in advance of availability. :rolleyes:

...what exactly is a "tech preview" compared to a regular old preview and why is it such a bummer of a thing?

(Honest, I'm not being sarcastic. I really don't know. :( )

Lemme take a shot at this:

Tech preview is basically a big rah-rah dance, put on by marketing and PR. "Here we are... we're so great... la la la..." with nothing of substance to back it up. No independent benchmarks, no preproduction samples for reviewers to play with. Mostly paper stats, a few tech demos, and lots of bold claims.

Regular preview is usually a pre-production sample running with pre-production drivers and tested by independent reviewers.

It's a bummer because it usually means one of the following:

[1] the product is disappointing in its current state;

[2] don't hold your breath waiting for product to hit the shelves.

paper previews are usually just for hype alone. what ever the motive for wanting hype, they all just want you to wait and build up anticipation.

hype. i would say it worked. people just kept asking, "where is nforce 2," "when can i buy it?" ever since it was released. if i was building an AMD platform i would get an nforce 2.

the cavaet being that if you make people wait too long, they obviously lose interest. i doubt that has really been the case with the delays AMD has been having getting new CPUs out the door though.
