I have a friend who currently has a celeron 1.7ghz and wants to spend as little money as possible to upgrade his CPU, every $50 makes a big difference. He currently has a 6800 non-ultra, and I was wondering how bad of a bottleneck a P4 2.8B w/ 533mhz FSB would be for him with this card? It's by far the cheapest route for him to go in terms of CPU upgrade. I know this CPU would bottleneck a 6800GT pretty significantly, but how about the 6800nu he has? Able to run Doom3 at 1280x1024 w/ 8x AF smooth? (currently with his 1.7 celly 800x600 is slow heh)

I'm thinking this cpu might be a decent match for a 6800nu.

If he wants a P4, don't bother with the 533 fsb versions. Drop to a 2.4 or 2.6 proc that supports 800 fsb. The 6800 will scale a lot better with that config.

Yeh but that means he needs to buy a new mobo & new memory. too much cash probably. exactly how bad is the 533mhz fsb with a 6800nu?

If that's the case, he may as well stick with what he has and save up for a complete system makeover.

I think, if he needs a boost of power get the 2.8b, it is wayyyyy faster then a 1.7ghz Celeron with a 400mhz fsb and lowly 128kb L1 cache.

If it doesn't cost too much, then do that upgrade. It will help.

That should get him by for a little bit. I suggest that he save $$$ on the side for a major system revamp. In the meantime he will get more FPS from the 2.8B upgrade compared to that old Celeron.

Enjoy. :)

I would agree get the P4 2.8g ,it will be a nice increase from a 1.7g celli.
