My 5800 clocks to 517/1000 MHz, just over 5800 U defaults. My 5800 Ultras all clock 517-525/1100-1200 MHz, so there's definitely an advantage to the real off-the-shelf ultra over a vanilla in my experience.
Did anyone ever see a consumer Ultra with the green translucent blower fan? The only ones I saw were engineering samples, not consumer cards.

I've seen plenty of green coolers in review pics, but never made it to retail (thankfully- they were really ugly). Indeed the advantage of the Ultra-graded cores is there. I have one that will run over 550 core. I never really pushed it beyond that, and I don't overclock it at all (except the "low-power" 3D mode which is clocked @ 500/ 100) anymore... really don't see the need...
And one other thing- your power supply needs to be pretty beefy to overclock these cards stably. Not sure what the minimum requirement would be to successfully overclock with, but I'm guessing 400 Watts assuming a quality power supply.

Not to get off topic but looks like...

there's a patch for HL2 that enables water reflection for FX cards like dx9.0! Good news for us FX owners!!!

You can overclock and run at 500/1000, if your cards heatsinking can keep the gpu and memory chips sufficiently cool at those speeds ?
Yeah, bumped it up until I hit 500/1000 and it crashed during the hi-res portion of game 1 in 3D Mark01. It's cruising @450/950 fairly decent and I'm still able to hit 39fps in timedemo1 of Doom3 so I can't complain too much (xmasgrin)
i just got my 5800NU...how do i keep it from going back to 2D....i can play games fine and they llok okay but when i right-click, properties and go to the nvidia tab, it says 2D...and what is a good temp for the card? mine's at 48C on stock cooling (it's the winfast a300td)...i can't seem to find any other informative 5800 threads anymore....

A temp of 48°C is very good. Anything 50-60°C for 3D gaming is common. Many people get 80-90°C for extended 3D gaming. FX 5800 operating temperature max is 140°C.
Under water cooling, my 5800 non-U runs 3D games at 26°C even when OC to 500/1000. I don't think I've seen anyone with a cooler 3D temperature. :jammin:
does the card automatically switch between 2D and 3D (i.e. 3D when i'm playing games, 2D when i'm surfing the web)? sorry for all the noob Q's but i don't remember experiencing this with my 5900XT....thanks.

I guess I'm not understanding the question... are you saying you can't get to the 3d part of the clock settings? I hope you didn't change the clock on the 2d settings.
And... you went from a 5900xt to a 5800? Wudupwidat?
i selected manual overclocking to get "3D" available...but after i exited out and came back to it, it was back at 2D......traded my 5900XT for a 4600 + 512 of PC3200...was running a 4200 for a while but found the 5800 so i bought it....missed a 5900SE for a decent price...i don't really regret selling the 5900XT...but it was/is better than the 5800...

really the best way to see what the 5800 (or any vid card) is doing, is run rivatuner hardware monitoring where it will display the voltages, and core/mem clock speeds on a time graph. keep it running when you run a 3D application and keep it running when doing 2D desktop stuff, you should see different speeds when you run a 3D app and when you close the 3D app.
cool. i'll DL rivatuner and check it out....thanks.

Hmmm, never seen that before. Is your clock settings holding when you open the 3d setup? Just be careful with Rivatuner... it's a very powerful program and in the hands of a "noob"... well, you know what can happen (xmasgrin)
I have that issue with rivatuner as well, on the 5800 if I clock the memory anything over 1000 and save it it will go back to stock. If I leave it at 1000 it will boot with retained settings. It runs fine at 1125.

I think 1000 is as high as you can go in the stock Nvidia control app for the 5800. You may have to go to the forum at www.guru3d.com and get more details from Unwinder as I have never exceeded the app settings for manual o/cing.
1000 can be exceeded in the riva tuner oc'ing part, but it will not save past 1000. I have checked and the only way to make it stay is to flash the bios and move it permanently.
everything is good now..3D stays. i don't know what was going on before...right now, it's running 450/820....the highest i've had the core was 479 w/out artifacts so i bumped it back down 450 ....

I think Coolbits limits clockspeed related to the card it detects-
for example here is a silly shot of Coolbits begging me to try 1Ghz...on the CORE!!
I'm thinking that's not gonna stick...

running 475 core / 875 mem for now...was getting tears in D3 with the mem at 880....i think i'm gonna pull the fancy winfast hs apart and put some as5 on..
