Another "me too"

My whole reason for buying an nVidia card is because they support FreeBSD (on x86). I've been running in x86 mode for over a year now waiting for amd64 drivers to show up, and the nvidia driver support is what's holding up my switch.

At this point I'd be happy with another 32-bit release, so my card will work in agp mode, but I'd really like to move to amd64.

Asus K8V-deluxe (via k8t800), athlon 64 3200+, nVidia geforce 6800 (AGP).

I purchased 5 amd64 workstations for work, all with nvidia cards. Gonna be buying another 20 machines for operations staff, but having second thoughts about using nvidia, as I can't use their binary drivers on amd64/FreeBSD.
More likely to go with a different vendor that has open drivers that I can build my self on amd64.

Come on nvidia! you are doing well, make it a home run!

So, how is it going with that driver? Any schedule on making it yet? We want to read your words about this. I guess the ones writing to this forum is about 1% of the people that actually want a FreeBSD/AMD64 nVidia driver.

Please, bring us some good news!

I don't think NetBSD supports Thread Local Storage(TLS). TLS was eventully required in FreeBSD to have NVIDIA continue releasing a kernel module.

TLS is also used in Linux and Solaris.

FreeBSD TLS. (http://people.freebsd.org/~marcel/tls.html)
Google doesn't really show any promising leads for TLS in NetBSD :-(

Anyways I think this is off topic. I'll shut up now.

It sucks when find out that every piece of hardware you have in your system rocks with FreeBSD except the video card. :thumbdwn:

The video card and the nForce3 nvnet.

"Me too". My new Opteron-based system is almost ready -- setting up the X-server is one of the few steps left. :thumbdwn:

The video card and the nForce3 nvnet.

Actually, the driver's page (http://www.onthenet.com.au/~q/nvnet/) suggests, that FreeBSD-6.x supports the device "out of the box". The net/nvnet port (http://www.freshports.org/net/nvnet/) should help users on other branches.

I wish, the video driver was as easily available as the network.

Dear Nvidia driver developers,
I'm writing you to ask you to support Nvidia drivers for the amd64 platform of FreeBSD. I bought an Athlon64 based system only get superior perfomance with 64 bits. I was extremely disappointed when I found out that there was no support for amd64.

Best regards,

I would be also very happy with a FreeBSD/amd64 driver. :)

I was also wondering:
now with a completely programmable chips such
as 6800, is still a problem for nvidia to release chip specs?
(please note, not the driver source code, just the spec).

An AMD64 FreeBSD driver is the only thing that I'm missing right now. :)

There are no plans to support FreeBSD amd64 at this point in time, but customer requests will certainly help prioritize future projects.

I hope NVidia team will change its mind on this topic and will assign the proper resources for releasing drivers for FreeBSD AMD64. I would be really glad if NVidia would hit again the market and the fans with a brand new platform supported :)
Thank you, keep up the good work, and give us amd64 drivers for FreeBSD :)

Yes a Nvidia graphics driver would be nice. I am also running FreeBSD 5.3 RELEASE AMD64 and have an Nvidia agp card. I think this thread has shown there is a demand for it so please give us an updated reply on project status.

I just bought a new PCI-Express GeForce 6800GT to go with my Athlon 64 (on my new nForce 4 motherboard I might add). I'm running FreeBSD/amd64 5.3-RELEASE, waiting for amd64 video drivers.

I too, would like to see a 64bit FBSD driver; I plan on installing both Linux64 and BSD64 on my new workstation. (That's slowly being built...)

However, sadly enough, I rather see nVidia improve the 32bit and 64bit Linux drivers before investing time into BSD ones...
(It would be nice, if the nVidia Linux/BSD dev group was big enough to develop both... somehow I doubt it....)

Cheers,

Mr. ZANDER I would REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, (really!) LIKE A DRIVER (Remember those) for FREEBSD AMD64 so I can use my 6600GT Card.

THERE ARE THOUSANDS MORE PEOPLE THAT DID'NT jump thru all the hoops and regiester and search and post and ask for a DAMNED D-R-I-V-E-R..

So where is it? MUST I USE AN ATI? You have 2 weeks to comply.

I can only laugh at that comment, since in a chat Ati said they had "No plans to support FreeBSD at all". 32-bit or 64-bit.

You do need to be practical, there are approx 40 posts of people that want a FreeBSD 64-bit driver. 40 people. 40 nvidia owners......that's quite a tiny number of people.

I guess ignorance *really* is bliss. You obviously havent tried. I have spoken to people that have gotten an Ati Radeon 92XX AGP cards to work in FreeBSD AMD-64 in hardware accelerated OpenGL mode "perfectly" . Have you even looked in the FreeBSD AMD64 forums? I know you haven't.

Duh? Guess what I am doing now? Returning my 6600GT and going to purchase an ATI.

Instructions for ATI Cards Only: Install DRI, and the following is necessary in your kernel configuration:

device agp
device radeondrm

Thanks anyway Nvidia.

Do you really think that people from all over the world magically found this forum, and then somehow managed to find this particular thread? I'd estimate this group of 40 as a mere 1%. So there are easily 4,000 people that would like and use the driver. Here's an idea, write the driver put it out there and see how many times it gets downloaded. I guarantee it'd be more than 40 -- Idiot.

Most people just email the support team directly at Nvidia if they really cared.
Not mess around on this "Disney Land mickey mouse forum" made for 14 year olds like you.

Geesh mommy can I click all of the happy idiot Smiley Icon's now.....?

Ok I will be more specific. Ati Radeon 9500series, 9600series, 9700 series, 9800series, x300 series, x600 series, x700 series, x800 series (and all mobile variants) have -no- 3d support in FreeBSD and Ati has no plans to support any of them for. For "older" cards (9200 or prior) you can get 3d support to function via the Dri (opensource) drivers.
Sorry for my lack of clarification.

Regarding my initial comment about the number of people requesting nvidia to support amd64 for freebsd, I was ->Not saying<- "don't voice it to nvidia", I was trying to imply that you should demonstrate the number of people with such a demand. Obviously this forum isn't home to that many FreeBSD amd-64 users. I'm sure there are more out there, many of whom are likely unaware of the consideration of the drivers.
If you want Nvidia to make a business decision in your favor, your best bet would be to 'gather' the FreeBSD amd64 users out there and get some further encouragement from them, as 40 people here (as previously stated) is one tiny market.

I finally jumped through all of the hoops to register. I hope you're not only looking at the 40+ posts to this thread, because there are also 2700+ views. That demonstrates considerable market demand for a 64-bit FreeBSD driver.

Don't underestimate your non-windoze geek customers. We can have a huge impact on the swing of the market. If ATI came out with full 64-bit FreeBSD support tomorrow, there would be a few thousand BSD customers switching to ATI and screaming at their windows friends to switch also. Who do those people listen to more, the PC Gamer ads or their geek friend down the street that does "magical" things with his/her BSD box? Ok, the magazine ads probably, but we can still have an influence.

Maybe a amd64 FreeBSD mailing list petition would help....

btw, how does the ATI 3D work on 64-bit FreeBSD? I've seen people switching on the bsdforums, but I can't imagine how well it works.
