Yes, the NEC3500a remains the best.

Five of my friends plus me are using this model DVD burner and it's really quite good. It's fast, reliable, and for $70 it's really the best deal going.

Reminder: if you buy it from Newegg make sure you click the box for a free 5 pack of DVDR discs with your purchase ;)

That exactly where I was gonna buy it from. :) I just wish it was a 5 pack of DL discs.

EDIT: and thanks for the link, Juice

Tell me about it, those darn DL disc are still pretty expensive. Newayz np man ;)

btw, when you get your drive, make sure you flash the Quickie 2.18 firmware (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=115690). Its got some nice speed hacks and runs pretty sweet.

Do I need a floppy to flash to that firmware? Or will a bootable CD work?

Most optical drives have software that allow them to have their firmware flashed safely from within windows. The flash prog has a sticky thread posted in their NEC Forum sub-forum.

They claim NEC is comming out with a refresh of that product, i was considering buying the 3500a but i think i may wait untill this arrives and see if it is actually better. Alot of the write specs are the same though!

Thx for the link. Keep in mind though that the latest doesn't always mean it’s the greatest, as is the case with Plextors PX-716A burner. They partically put out an emergency firmware update to steer away from having to recall the thing because of all the hardware issues ppl were having.

Yea couldn't see NEC screwing anything up too bad, especially since the specs are so close to that of the 3500A. Looks pretty much like a refresh product anyways.

Let us know when you get it ;)

I can't wait to install this thing and try it out. I just need some 16x capable DVD+/-Rs and/or a DL disc just to try it out.

It's so lame they don't have a DL disc packaged with it. :(

Pickup some good 8X recommended media (use CDFreaks forum for reference) & you’ll be good for 12x writing speed. (around 7mins for 4.7gb DVD-R) You don’t want anything faster because 12x burns are actually fast than 16x. Reason being is because the time it takes to switch between 12x -> 16x during the burning process (towards outer edge of media) is terrible slow & has been known to cause corruption issues. That’s why if you scroll through that forum, you’ll notice a lot of “hacked” & official firmware updates that limit burn speeds to 12x max.

Oh, awesome...I'm also going to flash the drive with the one you linked/recommended. I assumed burning at 16x wasn't a good idea, just like burning higher than like 32x for CD-Rs really isn't that good of an idea either.

Holy crap! I flashed to that Quickee FirmWare and it's letting me burn the 4x Ritek DVD+Rs--that I could previously only burn at 2.4x on the old burner--at 12x! It even was going to let me at 16x, but I don't trust that.

Is it okay that I burned that 4x DVD at 12x you think? Nero reported no errors...and it let me choose 12x (it was going to allow 16x but that was too greedy)...Nero won't let you choose anything that the disc can't be burned at safely, right?

If you verify the data and it comes out ok then you're golden. I burn Fuji 8x media at 16x speed and it works perfectly fine. All those ratings mean is they are guranteed certified at the speed, but lower rated media often works at those speed as well. I think it's the quality of the media that really makes the difference, hence I'm willing to pay a few dollars more for Fuji brand DVD+R discs.

Ah, okay...I've got Riteks which are teh best. How do I verify...when I'm burning in Nero, right? Is there any other way to verify BESIDES doing it then?

Yea Nero should have an option to verify the data written after the burning process has completed.

Sweet! I just reburned the disc I did before (since there doesn't seem to be a way to check a disc unless it is immediately after the burning) and it checked out! These 4x burn great at 12x.

Should I check EVERY disc I burn at 12x? Or would it be safe to assume they all work? I have a feeling I know what the answer is going to be, but I thought I'd ask anyway...

I would only check one or two out of your total batch/spindle that you have at a time.
