I've installed 66.93 drivers shortly after HL2 and before it ran on DirectX81 on default but now it runs DirectX90 and I that is without any shortcut keys or console commands. And it really makes a difference visually. I suspect that only water is slightly worse that on Ati cards judging by pictures on the net. I'm very glad to see my 5900 capable of running the game at 1024 with everything maxed at acceptable framerates:)

I've tried to force the DX90 path on my 5700 but, even with partial precision, the framerate drops a little too low. You might be interested in knowing that some 16 years old teenager re-did refelctive water under the DX 8.0-8.1 path using PS 1.3 and now it's available as a MOD.

There's a little performance drop but I can still play HL2 at 1024x768 with AA2x and AF4x

msxyz,
thanks for the info as there was a lack of real info in the other thread. Do you remember any FPS scores?

In the canal level the lower framerate with full precision for me was about 13-15 fps. It did remain always over 20 fps forcing partial precision with 3d Analyze. By comparison, using the default dx81 path it never goes below 30 fps.

I guess that with a FX5900 you can expect a framerate ~40-50% higher than mine with the same settings.

yeap I went through the threads on B3D, HardOCP, Here and Guru3D. It looks like for those with 5700+ it helps (which is a good thing). 6800s show no gain (other than manybe a few FPS depending on the setting). The said thing is that I looked at over 1400 posts and only found about 20 to 30 benchmarks on the subject. I could only find 3 users with 6800s that tested. Most where 5700 and 5900s. I did find one with a 5200. You would think if it was an hot issues we would have more benchmarks. Sadly we din't.
