A disappointing turn of events

As long as the shipping product has fully functional drivers in the box, I don't think the delay will be too big of a problem. Unfortunate, yes; deal-breaker, we'll find out when the cards reach shelves.

I think it's opportunity for nVidia. If they can officially announce their product soon, and I mean very soon, it could kick ATI where it hurts.
Now as to whether or not nVidia could do this, I dunno.

It depends who you believe for your sources of information. Tom's Hardware says Nvidia won't be able to get it out the door before 2003. If that's true, then it doesn't matter if the Radeon 9700 is a few weeks, as it will have about 4 months to itself.

does that conclusion come from insider information or from pure speculation?
they'll get it out the door for sure, they have no choice. the question is not if, but how limited will the quantities be.

I was at my local Best Buy this afternoon and have a bit more info on the 9700. They had a dummy box out that said they were accepting pre-orders for the card. The expect the 9700 Pro to be available for sale on Sept. 8 at a price of $399.99. With $10 down you can guarantee a 9700 for yourself. :)

Damn Ed, you live at that store!
That date sounds a bit better than the one reported earlier (by the [H]), hope they stick to it, it's gonna be a real nice card!

Information at the [H] direct from ATi now states that they will not be late and the chips and cards will be shipped to vendors within their 30 days set forth. It seems to be more of the matter of resellers getting them through their channels and onto the shelves, not an ATi problem.

Exactly Spiritwalker. ATI has said they are shipping on time, Im sure some stores will have them earlier than others.

I am very skeptical that any delay now is related to driver issues. I mean, you can just download the newest drivers off the internet. Why would they hold back shipping the card if the driver wasn't "perfect"? Forget the fact that a good fraction of people will never bother to update.
But this practice isn't unusual. Look at the Diablo 2 Expansion. If you bought the expansion something like 3 days after the release, they had already significantly altered it with a new version to be downloaded off battle.net. They won't hold the card for driver issues.

comparing software to hardware does not make a good comparison. hardware is expected to be stable, while software is too, Diablo 2 is patched to provide balancing, not to make the game more stable or fix critical errors. the last thing ATI needs or wants is to ship another card with crappy drivers. if the drivers were in such a state it would be a wise decision to work on them further, rather than unleash another hasty product. the ramifications and hazing from nvidiots alone would be rather nasty if they did it again, especially with a card that shows so much potential like the R9700.
So if both the cards and drivers are ready, when are we going to see accual reviews of these cards:confused:

Probably when the cards ship out we will see reviews. ATI said they would be SHIPPING 30 days from announcement. They announced on July 18th i think?

From Todays PR annoucment:
ATI will begin shipping the RADEON 9700 PRO board to retail customers and distributors beginning August 19,
Here's a snip from Quakecon, where I was able to play with a Radeon 9700 machine for a bit.

Also, if you'll look on the main page, I posted a bit about the Doom 3 presentation using a 9700.

those were the dates stated on sites as to when the cards would arrive. so no, they weren't rumors, they were straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. it's not our fault if the stores gave out late dates and later changed them to reflect earlier shipments

I called Best Buy last night and they said September 15th. They have a preorder box, they can preorder it now for 10 bucks, and they said they were not getting in less than 20 cards, perhaps more though. And that 2 people so far had preordered it. For a 400 dollar card, I find that amazing.
Still, that was the nearby Best Buy to me. I could order it online, but then I'd have to mail it back if I didn't like it (as has been the case with the retail R8500, the original Radeon, and the Rage128 before it). ;)
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thrice and misery on me. Fool me four times and no fifth fooling.

CainSyris really why did you not like the three ATI video cards you got a while ago? I never owned a ATI video card so just wondering. Did you get the ATI 8500 btw after a while it was out or right after it came out?

Are you trying to be sly with the double negative, and you are actually saying they will recieve more than 20 cards? Or did you kinda change the train of thought halfway through the sentance, and mean they are getting less than 20.
I only ask because I do the same thing all time:)

Speaking for myself, I don't remember much about the Rage 128 anymore. I didn't actually use it for a long time.
The Radeon 8500, however, was an example on how NOT to release a video card, from a consumer perspective. ATi did a good job marketing the product but that was it. The 8500 didn't have all of these hyped up features working--the same features mentioned on the box cover. How can a company sell a product knowing full well that XYZ features that was supposed to make the product great was not working? But there they were, selling the product.
The original Radeon 256 on the other hand was a much better showing. While it had that "fog" bug issue, the Radeon 256 did have all of its features working. The only drawback that the Rad 256 had was that it was overhyped by fans.
The 256 was hyped as a "gigatexel" video card. People equated this 1+ gigatexel to 1+ gigaPIXEL fillrate (and this was even before previews with actual benchmarks showed up). In truth, the Radeon 256's actual fillrate was 366 million pixels per second (for the 183Mhz version), not the 1 gigapixel that people thought. People don't pay attention to the units, instead they only look at the large number. The performance was not what the fans hyped it up to be.
For the Rage 128, Radeon, and Radeon 8500 I either pre-ordered or purchased just when it hit the local store shelves.
For the Radeon 9700PRO, I pre-ordered it. Received it yesterday and put it in my machine this afternoon. In the short-time using it, the 9700 is by far the best showing of any ATI product. It holds first, second, and third place. There's nothing that comes close to the 9700.
Having features that are working (or appear to be working) is how a product should be released, not that 8500 fiasco.
