Asus Card... Don't know what type it is..Help

Hi all

I picked up a Graphics Card at a car boot sale for £30.00. Its called a
Asus FX5500 256mb (has a connection for TV OUT, LCD, Monitor)

Serial No. 44CM1J3395 made in china

I've heard of a FX5600 but not this model. Have a picked up a dud

please help as i can't find any reviews on it, and is it any good

There is a FX 5500 model nvidia rolled out.........not sure whether ASUS produce them or not........

Price is OK if it is a 128-bit card.........otherwise, u r out of luck...

Its of a similar card as yours. Its not a bad card at all for the price you paid. Plays most games well at 1024 x 768. Performance is between an FX5200 and a FX5600 according to the article.

All FX5500's seem to be 128 bit (which is good). You can probably get FX5600 performance if you overclock a little.

I recall that its an architecture based on the 5200, but with 128bit bus I believe (like the 5200U), we sell some BFG 5500 OC here at Business depot. The price you payed looks fair/good.

FX5500 its a cheaper revision of the NV34 core. It's clocked at 270MHz core, 200MHz (400 DDR) RAM, 128 bit bus usually.

3D Performance is on par with a GeForceMX 440 (~7500 3DMarks01). Antialias performance is much improved, though, and can reach, if not surpass, hi-end GeForces 4.

Like the rest of the early NV3x architecture, it's a good PS 1.1-1.3 performer (it still retains 4 FX12 combiners/ALUs that can execute some arithmetic instructions at twice the clock rate) but rather weak with PS 1.4-2.0, even more since Nvidia halved the FP capabilities on 5200/5500/5600 models. A decent card, imho and 30£ is a good price. You can find in the rest of Europe such cards at ~60Euro

Athon 64 3200 (512k)
512 DDR (333)
120 GB (ATA 133) HD
DVD Dual Layer
Mini Tower
the above all for £249.00
Asus 256 mb 5500 (AGP x8)

Farcry ok at 800x600 (all maxed, but can only use default render)
Doom ok at 800x600
Vampire Masquarde ok at 800x600

My problem is should I have gone for the Socket 939 (Athon64 (1mb cache) as this computers Hopeless

No, you should have gone with a better video card. The Athlon 64 you have is plenty fine for current and near-future gaming. Your money would have been better spent on a GeForce 6600 GT or 6800 non-ultra.

I agree, its not your processor at all. The FX 5500 is VERY low end card. No modern game will run on it very well. Besides Socket 754 is alive and kicking, my 2.2Ghz Athlon 64 beats out most P4's.

Most games are GPU limited not CPU limited. Hell, An Athlon t-bird 1.4Ghz and a Radeon 9600 pro can out game that easily.

At the end of 2004 I don't recommend buying any Geforce FX 5xxx card.

Yes, I would even consider 10 pound sterling wasted on that FX5500.
No offense, but I'm always amazed at some ppl who go out budget shopping for a videocard thinking they got a great deal... and then end up with
such a card.

Yeah, you should budget shop for CPU, but a strong GPU is going to cost good money. Like anzak said, your gaming experience will be better with a 1.4 T-bird and a Radeon 9800 than a A64 and Geforce FX 5500.
