I had a 6800GT agp.. sold my stuff to a friend to build a sli setup. was going to get one gt now.. and one later. Well here it is, got my board, cpu, memory... but no vid card. I was wondering about modding a regular 6800. Is it possible? Does it work? And if so... what exactly are we looking at... what kind of performance? Any info's is appreciated.

I'm kinda confused by what your question is. From what I know about the 6800 NU (non-ultra/gt) is that the NU PCI-e cards don't have the ability to SLI. I doubt this will change in the future with the 6600GT being Nvidia's midrange SLI solution.

As for your quesion about "modding" the 6800NU, For starters, physically modding the card for SLI is impossible due to the lack of the SLI bridge connectors. So SLI is out.

So I'm assuming you're talking about the softmod to unlock the 4 extra pipes and extra vertex shader. This I have done on my AGP 6800NU and have found success with it. I don't have any artifacts with the pipes unlocked and it successfully overclocks. Now I have my GPU clocked higher then a stock GT and I have all 16 pipes and 6 shaders enabled, but I still don't get the performance of a GT from my 6800NU. My 128MB of DDR1 at 700MHz memory is the bottleneck that's keeping me from GT performance. Even overclocking the memory to 755MHz and I'm still far behind. The 256MB of DDR3 at 1000MHz gives the GT about a 20-30% increase in performance.

So if you're looking for some benchmarks showing what performance increase the soft mod will give, here is my results. (system specs can be found below)

3DMark 03 - 12pp 5vs - 7572
3DMark 03 - 16pp 6vs - 8940

3DMark 05 - 12pp 5vs - 2718
3DMark 05 - 16pp 6vs - 3615

Hope that helped somewhat. My advice, if you have the $270 for the NU, save up for the 6800GT to give you the option to SLI in the future. If that's too much, save your cash and get the 6600GT. For the time being, you'll perform close to the 6800NU, but you'll have the option to SLI when you get the money.

Sorry Had to register to say yes you don't know. Considering that I am looking at two MSI 6800 NU with SLI

Could this be downgraded 6800GTs or a vendor specific product? I don't remember NVidia officially anouncing this model. Does anyone know?

I emailed MSI about it because it is not on there website. What they told me it is a 12 pipeline with the CPU at 325 mhz and memory at 700mhz. I just got two of them today in the mail. The layout looks just like my GT. It has Hynix memory, I havent taken the cooler off yet to look at the GPU yet. As soon as I get my Mobo, we will see how well this things do.

Be aware that the first NV41s (genuine 12x1, 5vp boards) have started to turn up - there was a fellow with one posting on the Rivatuner forums. Additonally, current 6800 NU and LE boards are "locked" more strongly than older ones, and the script to unlock them will only be in RT 15.3 (we're currently at 15.2). 15.3 is slated for release at the end of the month or in the new year.

In other words, the window for softmodding is running out. There will come a time in the not too distant where NV40 based 6800NUs will disappear, and be replaced with NV41 based 6800NUs. So... yeah. I'd be guessing that SLI capable 6800s might well be NV41 based rather than NV40 based - softmodding them could be impossible. (Hell, it might be pretty hard in any case - no idea how RT would respond to two video cards).

i just picked up an Evga NU that modded to 16p 6v from circuit city few weeks ago. mod seems to be working great with rivatuner.
