Speaking of I-4s, 'cede, what's your opinion on the GM Ecotec motor?

Just as much potential as any other 4-banger from the import brands. The Gen I motors in the J-body (Cavalier/Sunfire) was a little harsh. They worked on the balance and it's quite a bit smoother in the new Cobalt. The biggest differance (and what the domestics have always given us) are *overbuilt* motors, no matter what kind they are. For all the tuners, it allows them to make turbocharging kits a little more potent. GM hasn't had to do much to it in the SS version of the Cobalt.

Yeah, I pretty much had the same thoughts. GM already pulled off the blower in the Ion Redline so they pretty much slapped the same motor in the Cobalt SS. It was interesting that they dropped the displacement down to 2.0-liters as opposed to the stock Ecotec's 2.2.

Same goes for pushrod I-4 engines. My dearly departed '92 Cavalier required only minor, inexpensive maintenance in its lifetime. Hell, the way that car was running when it was totaled, I'd probably still be driving it today (with nearly 200,000 miles on the odo).

my wife's 93 chevy just died on me... requiring me to get a 96 maxima SE to replace it with....

the chevy was relatively inexpensive to fix but boy did it ever have issues... :(

still.. it got me to work and back and thats what counts :)

likely woulda kept chugging along if the build quality was a little better but can't complain really... she was a good car :)
