new standard?

With the Abit OETS, and now the GeForceFX using ATX brackets, will all mobo manufactuers have one standard space between agp and pci slots?

I really doubt mobo vendors will touch the standard anytme soon...With the advent of hgih-performance on-baord solutions such as the nForce2, there is less of a demand for a TON of PCI slots, since people are owning less and else PCI cards. I think it is safe to assume that most people leave the PCI slot below the AGP slot open anyways ( for air-flow/cooling )...so essentially, this really does not present a problem for most.

the nv30 isn't that revolutionary to require such a change..now if ati and matrox start using similar cooling it might be considered.

The pci slot next to the agp slot almost always shares the same irq and that dosn't help the video card performance. It is better to leave that slot open any way for that reason and for cooling.

I plan on overclocking that baby to use some of that headroom the card has, what with it being a .13 micron and all. Of course the Heatsink will have to be a bit bigger. So far I've spec'd this one. It's off a 750KW DC Motor controller. Do you think I should attach similar ones to the Memory?

I would like other mobo standards like:

1) The ATX power cable must be far enough away from the CPU that you don't need to pull it out just to remove your CPU cooler.

2) IDE and floppy connectors must not be located at the bottom of the board unless the mobo ships with extra long cables.

3) All mobos that require an ATX 2.03 4 pin connector should ship with an adapter that allows you to use a regular 4 pin molex instead.

4) Extra tall capacitors should not surround the CPU socket.

5) The front panel connector should have the same pin layout on all motherboards.

6) The motherboard manual must be supplied in printed form, not a PDF file on a CD.

7) If it claims support for DDR 333, it should support all brands of DDR 333, instead of only 4 of them.


Anyone think of any more?

AMEN!!! I agree with everything you said. Especially the damn capacitors around the CPU socket those things can be SUCH a pain for fancy HSF's. Especially these days as HSF seem to be getting bigger and bigger.

Another thing I'd love to see happen is a change with IDE connectors all together. Like maybe use some fiber-optic cable to create a data cable similar to that of a CDROM audio cable. It would bend more easily than rounded IDE cables, it could be easily hidden, it would make case windows look GREAT!

As for the placement of the IDE & floppy connectors, I actually wouldnt mind them being placed all along the edge of the board rather than one behind the other. Side by side would work much better for myself at least.

Did you by any chance have an asus p4s8x at some point? This was one of my big complaints... In fact, at one point an asus tech told me to go with corsair memory despite the fact that it wasn't listed as supported by that motherboard per the manual. Doh! Why the hell would they certify Nanya memory BEFORE Corsair? Doesn't make any sense to me...

Buy the round ones... They help considerably. SCSI160 is still the best for a desktop PC IMHO... Not from a cost/performance standpoint though. Pure performance standpoint yes...
