Why upgrade to windows xp pro with service pack 1? Service Pack 1 is outdated, you will need to upgrade to Service Pack 2 and then it will be fine. (xmasmile)

SP2 is much more stable than SP1.
I've upgraded around 13 PC's to SP2
and non have had any problems.

Look like your system has messed up bad, I recommend you to slipstream Service Pack 2 into Windows XP and then do clean installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 like I did all the time. Of course Service Pack 2 are more stable and also much more secure than Service Pack 1. (xmasgrin)

Use the 67.03 drivers, they fix 6600/Sis problems. Your motherboard bears a Via chipset but it might help. Also, VIA's latest INF set.

Maybe you could try to update your motherboard BIOS, it could fix it in the same way someone posted a thread about SLI problem with ASUS board and the system crashed everytimes, latest motherboard beta BIOS finally fixed it. (xmasmile)

Did you simply install Windows XP over 2000?

my advise would be grab the latest drivers and bios/firmware for EVERYTHING you got.

Then do a full re-format and clean install on XP + SP2.

SP2 is bloatware! Im happy with SP1, have no issues and everything is fine!
