View Full Version : Why do some demos run very slowly on a 6800 nu?

I know someone who just got a deal on a PNY 6800 nu for his system. He's upgrading from a 5900 nu. I saw how slowly the Tinbury and Gas Station demos run on his system. It's like a slide show! The Gas Station demo ran much better on his 5900 nu! He ran HL 2 in 1600X1200, and it was very slow. When he bumped down the resolution to 1280X1024, it ran very well.

I told him the problem is most likely the paltry 128MB on the 6800 nu. He'd like to get a 6800 GT like I said but doesn't have the $$$ right now with the holidays around the corner. Could this be a driver issue? His system has 1GB of RAM and an AMD 3000+.

The Timsbury demo runs slow on everything, not quite sure on the others

HL2 should be playable at 1600x1200 without AA. If hes useing 4xAA or 6xAA then that might be the issue. But he should be able to use 8xAF.
Another thing ille mention is make sure he doesnt have the "refreshrate overrides" enabled by setting it to "applications control refreshrates", and should be useing Reforce or Refreshlock instead. The nvidia overrides is known to cause a performance loss in some games/benchmarks. He also should be useing the latest 67.03 from nvidia's site. I have an eVGA 6800nu and i have not had any issues with it other then with the refreshrate overrides which i got around.

Erm... how big's his AGP aperture? I know there was some fellow with similar probs who just raised the aperture size to 256 MB, and bang, it all worked.

Your right! Just changed mines to 256mb in the bios. My BGF6800 OC was running like around 1fps with the Nalu 6800 demo and it running fine now.

thanks Subtestube!

I don't know if he can change his AGP aperture settings in the BIOS of the system. He tells me his games seem to run much better than the 5900nu. The only problems are with the Timbury demo and Gas Station.

Gas Station has textures of over 200MB. Only a system with 256MB on the video board can play the Gas Station demo at a proper speed. The Gas Station demo developer complained to me once that he himself had problems running it until he got a 256MB board for his development rig. Timbury is likely the same.

I've never found Timbury THAT bad... I mean, it's a bit choppy, but it's nothing like the Gas Station, which is painful. But I guess "slideshow" is in the eye of the beholder.

I also noticed that when I use my 6800 NU w/ RIVATuner to unlock the extra pipes that the Demos run like crap. But games seem to be ok. Strange. Right now I run the new 67.03 drivers so I do not have the extra pipes unlocked and all is smooth now. :D

Athena: It's possible that you simply have damaged pipes and that they're somehow slowing it down - I notice a significant improvement (in Nalu especially) when the card is running in 16x1 6vp mode.
