A friend's computer scored a 303 in 3Dmark2003 witha MX4000, 512 megs of ram, 1.3? GHZ athlon. Is this about right?

For that CPU and card, that's about right.

Thanks, I also , finally, found a review on the card and apparrently it won't play some of the games in 3Dmark2003 I guess because of the PSers on it. He didn't watch the benchmark as it went so I guess he didn't realize. I think the review said it was a DX7 card, yikes.

The MX4000 is nothing more than a glorified GeForce2 MX.

It's a continuation of the GF4 MX 440, but that beat any geforce2, even the ultra. So it was a decent budget card when it came out.

At least the MX440 could run DX8.0... The MX4000 is only DX7.0

No, the MX440 was a DX7 part.
MX4000's use a 64 bit memory bus, and their performance doesn't scale with cpu speeds IIRC... they find themselves beat by not only MX440SE's, but also GF2ti's/Pro's/Ultras...

Really? i could've sworn that MX440 ran DX8. In HL2 the FX's ran 8.1 along with the GF4's, the GF3's ran 8.0 (and i thought that the MX440 ran 8.0 with them) and the GF 2's ran 7. i really thought that the MX440 was DX8.0
GF4's are DX8 not DX8.1 parts.

it might be a dx8 compatible card ,that does not mean it supports all the functions , its has NO pixel shaders , therefore not fully dx 8 compliant

No the Geforce 4 MX 440 is actually a code named NV17, Which is based off the original NV10 with a new memory controller and multisampling anti aliasing. But the NV1x generation is Geforce 1 based.

That score is about right for a dx7 video card which can only run the first game test. I found a review you might like to read which features an xfx mx4000 vs gainward geforce4 mx440 vs elsa geforce2 mx400. The geforce4 mx440 wipes the floor with both of them but the mx4000 and geforce2 mx400 are about equal. When you consider that the mx4000 is the old geforce4 mx440 you can clearly see the performance hit caused by the 64bit memory.
I was going to say how poor the performance is and then I noticed that the xfx mx4000 only costs about £20 which is a bargain!
