View Full Version : Firefox is making me angry...

OK, so I exported my bookmarks from Opera to a .HTML file. When Firefox goes to import them I select the file, click OK, and then nothing. No error, nothing. It just doesn't import anything at all. So I figure I'll try a workaround - let's try IE because I can import directly from there. So I try to get IE to import the HTML file, it keeps telling me "Not a valid bookmark file". Nevermind the fact that I can open the file up directly in IE without any problems. Hell I can even re-save it from IE as .HTML and yet it still won't import, keeps coming up with the error about it not being a valid bookmark file.

WTF? This is stupid, it shoudl just work and I shouldn't have to sit here and troubleshoot it for two hours before finally pulling out a gun and blasting the computer away. :)

Well I just installed Firefox 1.0 from 0.8 and it wiped all my bookmarks, pass me the gun when you are done.

Sweet. Now I'm starting to wonder if it was worth just sticking by Opera. I checked the FireFox page and it mentions in the FAQ to try "Bookmark Priest". Unfortunately that program is the sux0r - it converts the bookmarks alright, but ALL of the names are ruined. I now just have a list of numbers for each bookmark and the english names went bye-bye. A lot of good that does you. WEAK.

Maybe it's Opera's exporting fault since IE thinks it's not a valid HTML file?

That isn't the case because IE will open the saved HTML file and the bookmarks show up. I can even save as at that point and save it from IE as HTML again, yet it still won't import. Ridiculous.

I finally said to hell with it and just entered the damned things in firefox manually. What a PITA.

The problem lies in exporting from Opera. The HTML format can only be read by Opera, its mostly used for putting bookmarks from Opera to Opera.

The best thing todo is in firefox goto Import and it should allow you to import from Opera, or maybe not. If not then import the bookmarks into IE and do the same thing in firefox.

No, that isn't it. The HTML file was originally created in Opera - true. However, IE can open the HTML file just fine by doing a file->open operation. I can even then save the file and overwrite it FROM IE directly. Firefox still wouldn't let me import it even though it should've handled it just fine at that point.

FYI, Firefox will not import from Opera. But then again neither will IE. :)

Try using del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us). There are a few utils out there to export your existing bookmarks to del.icio.us That way, you always have access to your bookmarks (and you can mark them as private if you want so others can't access them) from any machine. Also, you can backup your del.icio.us bookmarks at any time to XML via this link: http://del.icio.us/api/posts/recent?count=10000

FireFox can import Opera bookmarks just fine.

Just go into Manage bookmarks, then File, Import and select Opera. It should be able to detect any Opera installation and import it's bookmarks, no need to export them first...

Which would work OK if I hadn't uninstalled Opera before installing Firefox. ;)

I figured exporting the bookmarks both in Opera format and also HTML would be fine. And it should've. I took my HTML file and a friend's Firefox 1.0 imported them just fine. My system, with a fresh install of Firefox, didn't work. Wierd thing is my work laptop also did the exact same thing. WTF eh?

The structure of exported HTML has to be formated in a specific way for a file to be a valid bookmarks HTML file. Probably Opera uses a different format then Firefox or Netscape. They all open and show in any browser but the bookmarks importing code expects it to be in a specific format. That is why it doesn't import it then.

I'm also using Firefox, its working great except for the fact that it will not allow me to log out of Nvnews.Net LOL. It automatically re-signs me in, thus always keeping me signed in. Any suggestions, again I am new to it and just experimenting but wondering how this can be fixed in options

Have you tried deleting/clearing your cookies and temp files? You'll be logged out then for sure.

Anyone know how FireFox works w/Java? Do you need Sun's Java installed? Or does FireFox come w/Java?

I think you still need to install the JVM. I've never had any problems but if you do this site seems to have some workarounds:

One thing I noticed about the tabbed browser extension - with it installed firefox refuses to load any new themes until I remove it. Once removed I can install themes again and then just reinstall the tabbed browser extension. Strange.

Hmm, that is strange. I've not seen that behavior before.

I could go and try to download a new theme but when I would click on the link to the .jar file it wouldn't open it. It would just sit there and do nothing at all. Remove tabbed browser extension and it worked fine. I thought it was odd as well.

Duhh I'm a n00b like that sometimes. It did work :) Just thought it might have been some internal error within FireFox. Thanks for the info though!
