And it's not a new engine. It's the same engine the original UT runs on. All they did was add more textures and tweak a few things. At least JC is making a completely new engine with Doom 3.
LOL, the new Unreal engine that he showed off is so far removed from UT and UT2003 that it's indistinguishable from them.
not a funny joke at all, did you even see the demonstration? even with a minature movie window it was amazing.

so if you apply that logic budd, doom 3 alpha is just revamped quake 3 engine too right?

Didn't JC say that he used Q3 engine to build D3 engine?

It's the same engine with more bells and whistles and does use some DX8 functions, but it's still a DX7 game no matter how you shake it. I wasn't joking about that, I was just having some fun with Savage (and glad he didn't get pissed. Heh, you get bored at work sometimes). IMO the game doesn't look that amazing. There is nothing graphically awesome about it except for the use of some DX8 shaders. I've played it, and you could call this the original UT. It's almost the same game--just looks a lot better.

hmm, in that case what do you think of Doom 3? obviously Doom 3 is more complete than this new Unreal game is, i thoguht the characters were a lot more impressive in Unreal than in Doom 3. so what do you classify Doom 3 as, just another "DX7" class game?

Errr...Doom 3 is OpenGL.

gotcha. I still expect Unreal 2 to do a LOT more with 3d stuff.

no kidding, that's why i said "so what do you classify Doom 3 as, just another "DX7" class game?"
ie, something that doesn't really use VS or PS to any extent for extra graphical effects.

That new Unreal Engine built uses PS & VS.
IT DOES EXACTLY THE SAME THING AS DOOM3 (Per-Pixel Lightning, Bumpmapping, etc.) + SOFT SHADOWS (Not lika those D3 shadows that are always sharp)
Go look at that Video from nVidia with the GFFX launch in Las Vegas (The streaming one), I find it looks WAY better as D3.:D
..sorry 4 my english :D

I classify Doom 3 (for now) as an OpenGL game, cause that's what it is. But I dunno how JC will have everything rendered in the game, no one does, so I can't really answer it any further.

IT does use vertex and pixel shaders. Vertex shaders for the tangent space setup, and pixel shaders for the per pixel lighting and bump mapping. durrrrr...
I find it looks WAY better as D3
1 character with a soft shadow wandering around a room that seems to be mapped with 1 texture, doesn't exactly match my doom3 thrashing image.
It didn't look like the environment did any dynamic shadowing. Only the player. How you can claim to tell anything from such a low res, and completely unfinished, and unimplemented test render I dont know.
Seems to be alot of negativity round here lately. Practically no-one has a good word to say about nv30, and now 1 shadowed character walking around with 1 light, and OMG its better than doom3! Even though we haven't even seen doom3 (I dont class a nearly 5 month old alpha, non interactive demo, to be representative of doom3's current state) cos it's not even out yet!

I hear that.
By the way, I personally think NV30 will kick ass, and I have no reason to say it.

seriously, i feel the same way until benchmarks prove otherwise. of course crowing about how great something is is stupid, it only gets you labelled as a fanboy, and rightly so.
of course gfFX may not end up performing as well as i think, in that case, i'll label it the POS that it is. but honestly, we have no good quality screenshots of anything the gfFX has done, no reviewer feedback based on firsthand use, etc. it's still too early in the day to be making absolute judgment.

uhuh. tell that to the guys in the nvidia gfx card forum. The seem to be tearing it to pieces on a daily basis. :)

Seriously the only release that hasn't impressed me when it comes to NVidia is this 4200+8x/4800 thing I'm hearing about....
obviously, I was expecting something else <g>
I don't expect to be disappointed with the NV30. They made some choices, and stuck with them even when it started to screw schedules up. Oh well, that just means more time to refine the card+drivers if you ask me.
But eh, we'll see. Hope I have money next year...bout midway through it sounds good :)
