My friend PappaCass (duron 1k/gf4mx440/kt133a) is being bitten by the Athlon bug finally, and is itching to get one into his system. 1.4's are hard to come by, and are hot and expensive... I've read a few rumblings about kt133a "unofficially" supporting XP chips... He will not buy a new mobo (he knows of the newegg deals etc. but will not invest in that way presently) due to his pride in the DDR bus (not memory), the benchies vs. AMD 760 & kt266, and the fact that the big money's goin towards a 2800/ddr400/nv30 in Feb...

I want him to run something cool (in temperature) since one of the plastic clips broke on his socket, and we'll have to create an effective clip that uses one of the side tangs and not the center one...

I heard that underclocked XP's might run on this setup... I really don't think he'd mind an XP1700 at around XP1550 or so...

Anybody ever heard about this and/or tried it with kt133a?

my 1600+ works fine when i tried it in my iwill kk266a. it is a kt133a. because on the website it supports athlon xp processors and i downloaded a bios update to use it. what motherboard brand does he have, check the website for the model, and specs and see what processors it supports or if the brand has a athlon xp compatibilty chart. if it does, he has a good chance of getting it to work. amdmb.com forums is a good place to get answers.

You shouldn't have to do anything to in depth, just buy a heatsink that uses all 3 "tangs" on both sides of the socket. The Globalwin SAK 38 is one that immediately comes to mind.

Your friend should be ok my XP1600+ works fine with a KT133A (Abit KT7A 1.1) just had to adjust "CPU Drive Strength" to 1. It idles around 39 c and never gets above 45 c (Global WIN CBK II 58 + 5000rpm).

Last time I checked, the pdf manual for this mobo wasn't accesible, but yesterday I found it, and discovered an addendum that added Athlon XP support! With that said, plus the statements given by kt133a users, PappaCass is now much more comfortable about his system options. He thought he had a 1.4ghz ceiling...
