i just used coolbits to OC my 6600GT from 500mhz to 600mhz. and the memory from 1ghz to 1.2ghz. when i played half-life 2 on high settings in the most intense part of the game for half an hour it topped out at 52C. it idles at 42C. is that too high? or is it just fine? can i push it harder?

With OC you are always risking a possible mishap by going over the limits determined by specificatons layed out by NV. The effect maybe benefical now but in the long run, it maybe very detrimental as the channels etc get eroded due to too much stress on the die itself.

also, 592/1.19 was the recommended

are you recommending that i get an extra cooler?

U could do so, the temps seem fine but what i am trying to say it overclocking is not always a good idea. It damages your GPU, which may not be apparent untill it goes tits up.

Some ppl fare well with o/c ..some ppl don't. Your choice...just I was warning you of the possible consequences of o/c

If you are going to do it, do so with the best cooling you can get, NV5? water cooling? phase change cooling :)

He never said that. All you can do is test whatever settings you choose to see what works best for your specific card. No two cards are going to give the same results. Start with what the drivers reecommended and go from there.

By the way, the edit button is here for a reason.

What program are you using to measure your temps?

My 6800GT at full loads runs at 73c so 52c does not sound bad.. but then again you have the 6600GT and I dont know what the threashhold on that GPU is.

52 sounds too good to be true for a 6600 GT. That is why I asked what program he uses to monitor the temps.

If I was him, I'd use RivaTuner because the control panel will not give you an accurate reading of the maximum load temp. By the time you exit the game and go into the control panel, the temp could have dropped off by 20 degrees.

Rewt, where in RivaTuner can you monitor temps? I -just- downloaded RivaTuner. Using speedfan, the temps are just: temp1, temp2, temp3, temp4 etc so I dunno which is actually my 6800 gt's temp. I'm assuming it's the highest, but on desktop that is 66C. =( Still, I don't see where you can view temps in Riva.

I'm not changing anything because honestly I have no idea what I'm doing with OCing and the like yet.

Guess my, uh, 'newer' card doesn't have those sensors or something. In that monitoring area I only get this:
