To demostrate this great tweak using the wonderful Rivatuner 15.3, I'll use CS: source, which uses the same engine as HL2. I think this tweak will be suitable for cards that can't get playable framerates when enable AntiAliasing (AA) and anisotropic filtering (AF) at 1024x768 resolution.

My system specs are:
Mainboard - Abit NF7 2.0 nforce2
CPU- Athlon XP 2600+
Ram - 1GB, 333mhz.
GFX Card - Geforce 5700 non-ultra 128mb (2d-300/550, 3d-480/550)
Sound Card - Audigy Platinum
Software - Win2k SP4, Kx drivers 3537 (sound), Nvidia 67.03 beta.

My Counterstrike source detects 5700 as a DirectX 8.1 card (since it will make it damn slow if I forced it to run in Dx9 mode.)
I left the original CS settings as recommended for Directx 8.1 card.

After installing Rivatuner, let's backup nVidia's initial settings.
Go to power user tab, at the buttons below:
(1)Click open match database (if driver database not found, use the closest)
(2)Select all entires.
(3)save selected entires to preset. (save to anywhere u like)

Now for the tweak:
(1)Click merge preset
(2)Click Rivatuner (folder) ->Presets -> Nvidia ->W2K -> High Quality
(3)Click Ok.

Here are the results. Note the FPS on top corner.

Original CS settings.

With Anisotropic filtering @ 2xAF

No AA No AF, High quality Rivatuner tweak.

Try it guys. :) And Happy New Year.

Your just overriding the display settings in HL2 with Rivatuner, the same thing can be accomplished using just the Nvidia control panel.

Rivatuner is a great utility though.

You may want to check out some of these modified drivers (xtreme g and such), they claim increased frame rate with no visual quality loss and/or same fps but with better visuals. In the end they do the same thing Rivatuner does and things you could do your self using just the Nvidia control panel.

I know that its overriding HL2's preset but honestly, I trust Rivatuner more than "modded" drivers. Furthermore, I can undo them simply by clicking on the backup preset and not uninstall the modded drivers. I used them in the past and found that it works great in certain games, but not in others.

Radeon 9800 pro is midrange, Geforce 5900 Ultra is midrange, your card is low end.
