View Full Version : 3D Mark scores for 6600GT low?

I just got this today and it runs great. I downloaded the 71.20 drivers and updated my VIA 4in1 mainboard drivers also. It runs everything great, but I ran 3Dmark2005 out of curiousity and I scored like 2600. I saw others with my exact same configuration score about 2900. I just wanted some advice if maybe I missed a driver or something, I'd appreciate the help. Here is my DXdiag information:

They may have the card overclocked or possibly done with a clean Windows install. Usually you will score higher with a fresh install. Did you end task or close down background programs before running 3dmark05? They may also be using different memory at a higher speed such as pc3200 or whatever even tho its the same amount(512MB).

It's probably my memory then. If I want to overclock though I'm wary. I installed winfox and I have the ability easy sure and I know to watch for artifacts. It also gives the temperature of the card though and I'm wondering what safe temperatures are for the GPU and the memory before I do anything. It says it runs the GPU about 51 celcius while I play Prince of Persia and about 35 for the Memory. Now the critical temperature it says is 128 celcius which I don't think is right. I'd be hesitant to raise anything as 51 celcius seems super hot for anything to me. I used search to look for something but didn't find anything on it or google. Help is appreciated, thanks.

51C is average and is not super hot at all. Most newer vid cards are running in the 40c60c range for idle on the gpu core(stock air cooling) and 50-80c for high load on the gpu. The 128c you mentioned is the core shutdown threshold where the vid card will auto clock down to avoid damage or shut off entirely so no damage occurs. Nvidia has stated these cores are fine up to 100c and you shouldnt worry unless it goes over 100c. At 51C your fine.

One thing I was wondering about SLI is this. Each card only has 128 megs of ram. Does a game see this as 256 megs of video ram or 128?

Anyway as far as your question on Farcry, when it drops below 28 fps, is that for just a sec or so or for a good period of time? My guess is if it is just for sec that the game is loading some thing from the HD at that moment and you should not worry about it.

I just got this today and it runs great. I downloaded the 71.20 drivers and updated my VIA 4in1 mainboard drivers also. It runs everything great, but I ran 3Dmark2005 out of curiousity and I scored like 2600...

My 6600GT & Athlon64 3200 gets about 3600 in 3dmark2k5. I suspect your CPU is the limiting factor, and that your score is probably perfectly normal. I wouldn't worry too much. I also noticed you only have 512mb of RAM, so that might be hurting your score too. 1gig total RAM might help.

If you're really bummed, I recommend either overclocking the hell out of your AthlonXP :firedevil
or grab a cheap Athlon64 solution ;)

3dmark05 is quite cpu-independent according to tomshardware
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20041221/cpu_charts-17.html
atleast with the 6800gt

Also some 6600gts are clocked significantly higher than the default clock 500/900 (agp), 500/1000 for pci.

edit: IMO no need to go hunting for A64s and a new mb just to gain 100-200 points in 3dmark05

...Also some 6600gts are clocked significantly higher than the default clock 500/900 (agp), 500/1000 for pcie.

Just an FYI, at least half the 6600GT AGP models available actually have the same clock speeds as the PCIE models. Nvidia's official spec is 500/900, but many including my Gigabyte 6600GT AGP are clocked at 500/1000.
