Q: What is this whole Dark Mod thing about, then?

A: The Dark Mod is a total conversion mod for Doom 3, which aims to create a moody, stealth experience reminiscent of the 'Thief' games from Looking Glass Studios.

So is it a game, or an editor?

It's both, but the editor will come first. Our goal is to provide all of the textures, models, AI, and programming necessary to allow Fan Mission authors to create their own stories. Once those tools are released, we will be using them to create our own campaign for release at a later date. We hope others will take the tools and come up with their own missions!

Yeah, saw the trailer for this, looks pretty nice. It will be interesting to see how a Thief game is in the Doom 3 engine, the engine they used in Thief 3 was pretty nice for the game with all the real-time shadowing, it'll be interesting to see where level designers take this. I do hope that you can use projection lights for certain things though, in Thief it would be nice to be able to put partial shadows in places (like how the lighting from the lanterns in that screenshot are extremely ridged, it would be nice if the light had blended into the shadow more smoothly). Definatly looking forward to this mod/editor, but at least the name is appropriate for the Doom 3 engine :D

Uh oh, I know I've been on this forum for too long when people know I'd like something before I even see it :D

And yeah, more Thief-like games are always good, especially ones with level editors! I'm almost considering taking a look at the dev tools when they're released and seeing if it would be plausable for me to make a level. Actually, they DO say they need animators...hmm...what program is used for animating models in the Doom 3 engine?

some new updates since then .. one grabbed my attention was :
"Standard Doom3 AI tests for finding enemies via vision and sound have been majorly rewritten. Our AI now have some chance of seeing you based on the current lightgem value and the distance between the player and AI. Our AI will hear you if you make a sound above their hearing threshold, and the amount above the threshold determines how alerted they get. Suspicious player sounds are now propagated to the AI with a completely new sound propagation system that is based on physical models of sound. In addition, AI may also propagate sounds and alert other AI (eg shouting in combat, the clash of sword on sword or crying for help).

This looks like a very good team as well as a very good way to use the doom 3 engine. Some of their player/npc models look superb.

To be hoenst, I am shocked that they didn't use the Doom3 engine for Thief III. Would have benn a hell of a lot better than that dues ex engine crap they made. I would personally like to see all of the thief3 maps converted to Doom3 engine maps.
