View Full Version : Temple of Elemental Evil crashing on a new XFX 6600GT AGP?

I just picked up the above card to replace my 9700 Pro. After having to play with driver sets to fix the terrible flickering I was experiencing in my games everything seems to work fine -- except for ToEE. On a fresh install without any patching it refuses to play the Bink videos; if I hit Esc a few times I can get to the main game screen, but if I try to change the resolution it freezes. If I apply the latest patch it crashes to the desktop immediately upon launching.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any possible workarounds? Thankyou in advance for any help. (xmasmile)

I purchased the XFX 6600GT and besides a hiccup with the nalu demo, I have had no problems with video or flicker. Might be else where on your computer. Good Luck.

whats the temperature? is it overheating? you might want to remove the heatsink and check the thermal compound. clean it off and reapply it properly. i must say they do a really sloppy job at the factory. i think this voids your warranty though. i knew i wasn't going to be returning mine or anything.

A little follow up:

I decided to go ahead and format since a) it had been a while and b) I wanted to eliminate the chance of some sort of driver conflict with my previous card. Using the 66.93 WHQL nVidia drivers everything else is working like a charm -- performance is increased and more stable, the odd flickering I was experiencing is gone, etc. However, ToEE still refuses to run properly.

My card runs at around 55 degrees at idle and stays below 80 under a full load. I haven't experienced any kind of artifacting or other signs of heat issues, and those temperatures are at least acceptable, so I'm ruling that out for the time being. Without being patched the game's videos still refuse to play but I can skip them and at least see the main menu. Changing resolutions locks the game up. After applying the latest patch skipping past the videos dumps me back at my desktop.

I had my friend test the game out on his system (which has my old 9700 Pro in it) and it ran fine. Could this just be a driver issue? Does anyone else here have a 6600GT and ToEE?

This one, too : http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=416056

Also, as suggested in the thread, install the latest Binkplayer from here : http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe (it's the complete Bink SDK, but it should work...)

I tried the latest Binkplayer but it still crashes to desktop.

After reading at ataricommunity.com I get the impression Atari has abandoned the game. I'll steer clear of any games released by Atari from now on.

Did you install/reinstall the motherboard GART drivers for the AGP bus?
