gone are the days (well, soon enough at least) where people say that ati does not support linux

:D
if you look here http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html you may find a surprise under operating systems

Oh-kay... 'ATI’s Unified Linux Driver'... CATALYST for Linux in short... Posted November 21, 2002, even better... Mmh, is it freezing in Hell already ? :)
(I still want the MMC package! :p)

Only if the drivers are good.

1st releases from any company are rarely good...
it's taken nVidia a long time to get good Linux drivers since it's constantly changing, I don't think ATI has the resources to keep up IMO...
A friend of mine submitted a glowing report for my approval with a 8500. This is truly great news for Linux and Linux gaming in particular. However I believe it is the widespread support for Linux by the movie making comunity to which we owe this honor.

Well, I got a Radeon 9700 to look over, and Linux just refuses to work with ATI's drivers.
That is, apparently the built-in agpgart module doesn't appear to support my brand-new nForce2, and, obviously, neither does ATI's. ATI's drivers utterly fail with no AGP support, apparently. So, I'm currently looking at a 60Hz display with no GL support. Anyway, I'm going to start a new thread to see if I can get some help in getting AGP to go...
Btw, first impression: ATI's fwglxconfig is pretty cruddy at setting of the XF86Config file.
IIRC, there is no nvagp module (it's built into the nvidia drivers), so you'd better hope that either agpgart gets nForce2 support in a newer revision (which it might!), or you see an nvagp module (which is also a possibility).

Wow, I actually got these drivers compiled and installed - but I'll spare you the dirty hacking details to veer around the multiple compilation errors that came up. There are problems with certain versions of GCC apparently.
So far, X refuses to launch though. :p
That's at least a major improvement since I couldn't even compile the first Linux drivers ATI ever made available. I need to go deeper into that, but with my GF4 acting up I'm kinda fed up with graphic cards for today.

That's because you've never used a true version of Linux :p :D

Actually, the main thing I meant by that was that it should be able to read the keyboard/mouse settings off of your current file. It's not that hard to do.
I had to manually re-enter my keyboard/mouse settings after ATI's config file screwed 'em up (they don't list all options that RedHat has...).

Only RPMs......
Not all Linux users use RPM's Linux Based distributions!
I think that the best choise is to give specs to open devlopers and let them to write drivers

And ati does both, gives out the specs AND writes drivers :)

My tries :
under RH8, afer some dificulties to integrate the ati drivers, i got ~2200 with glxgears.
UT2003 runs well ... for 10 mins and my systems hangs. This not arrives under XP.
btw it's on the way :-)
PS: winex/wc3 does not launched now (as it's run before with nvidia drivers). don't try another game yet.
