Just curious...has anyone else come across any info like the news bit I posted from AMD MB?

I half-wonder if the author "slipped"....

:D

The rumor's been floating around for a while.

I haven't seen an official announcement from Apple yet, which is what everyone was expecting at Comdex.

It's a great move for Apple if they do it, but Steve Jobs is so thickheaded when it comes to separating the OS from the hardware.

Darwin can already run on x86 hardware, so the next step is to get Jobs out of the way :D

Rumors of an x86 MacOS surface every few years, whenever a fool visits Infinite Loop and sees Darwin running on an x86 machine.

These people tend to forget Apple is a HARDWARE company. No one mistook Apple for a software company in the Apple][ days; don't do that now. Apple sells software only to enable more HARDWARE sales. No other reason. You think Apple margins on MacOS sales compare to margins on hardware sales? If so, you haven't done the math.

The Darwin code base that Apple uses for MacOS X has 'always' been available in both x86 versions and Power PC versions. It is reasonable to believe Apple validates their Darwin code base on both platforms. This doesn't mean Apple has any plans to release an x86 version of MacOS X.

The minute Apple releases MacOS for generic x86, they lose their profit margin, they lose iconoclast appeal, and they lose any control over the baseline hardware.

MacOS x86 ain't for customers. Not in our lifetime. Not in Steve Jobs' lifetime.

The belief is that the hammer will be used in Apple-controlled hardware, thereby keeping their pointless grip on an ever-decreasing market.

I agree with you that Jobs will have to be removed before any shift on Apple's part to a generic x86 platform could take place.
