Ok guys...

Everybody knows there is an issue with 6800 cards, maybe with NF3 chipset. But what I would like to know is that is a 6800 card problem, a NF3 and 6800 problem or a driver problem.

That's why I am creating this poll : is the problem due to NF3 chipset or not ?

I am talking about the 5-30s freezes, non stuttering in games. So please don't poll you have this problem if yours is different.

When polling, please tell us :
- your mobo.
- your graphic card.
- OC sytem/GC or not.
- the game/benchmark where freeze happens.

Thanks for your answers.

Edit : I forgot the "no" for the #4, please read "no problem with a VIA mobo"

I have a MSI K8N Neo Platinum with a Galaxy 6800NU (16x1,6vp), OC to 350/850.
CPU and Memory are at normal speed.
Freezes happen at random with 3D games (no OpenGL), most frequently with 3DMark 03 sound test.

The only time I've had problems with my Neo2 Platinum and 6800 GT are when my system has been overclocked past its limits. Normally this has been system memory-related as some testing with SuperPi confirms problems. Backing off my OC has fixed pretty much everything.

Have you tried gaming without the card running at 16x1?

The problem is that when I was with my NF2 mobo, it was working perfectly, with 16x1/6vp and OC !

I have no freezing at all with my Biostar K8VHA Pro (Via Chipset) and PNY 6800GT. Didn't see an option for it...

the 4th one... Forgot the 'no' :)

Freezing happens in all games if the card is overclocked (above 400/1100) and fast writes enabled. Specs are in my sig below.

Pauses in all Direct 3D Programs only when overclocked graphics card.
MSI K8N NEO 2 Platinum motherboard (nForce 3 250GB).
BFG 6800 Ultra OC (overclocked out of the box at 425 core, 1100 ram).
Runs fine downclocking to stock reference values (400 core, 1100 ram).
PSU: Antec Neo Power 480 Watts. 18 Amps on +12 Volts rail.

I get freezing and stuttering all of the time, even in Doom3. Framerate is through the roof. This is on a NF3 mobo. Fastwrites off, no overclocking. Really a shame. I love the 6800gt. I have a x800pro on order now to see if it fixes my problems. I am finished doom3, I wish that it was a more pleasurable experience. But I am not going through hl2 the same way.

Leadtek 6800GT.

Asus K8N and DFI Lanparty 250Gb (Both NF3 boards).

PSU 28Amps on 12v output.

With Fastwrites off, the card can do 400/1100 no problem on both cards.

With Fastwrites on the card exhibits the 5-10 second pauses in 3D games.

I can get the pauses to disappear with Fastwrites on by setting equal clock rate of 400/1100 in both 2D and 3D. This isn't enough however I have to set the clocks from 1 - 6 times before the pauses disappear, every time I set the clocks I test with 3Dmark01 which is the worst offender for me, if it pauses I quit 3Dmark right away and set and test the clock speeds again in coolbits to 400/1100 and repeat the 3Dmark01 test. It usually takes 2-3 (sometimes more) runs of this before 3Dmark completes pause free, from this point on the pauses disappear in everything 3D. Since my computer is on 24/7 this is a minor annoyance.

There is something going on with overclocked 6800 cards and NF3 boards. I don't expect Nvidia to do anything, after all the card is overclocked.

Same here, my 10-sec pauses happened only when my 6800U was clocked at 425. If I left the card at the stock Leadtek settings it was working fine.

Thankfully, nary an issue here, and I've had my 6800 since May of last year, used on both a Neo FIS2R and a Neo2 Platinum.

This has happened with me when I got the 71.20 drivers, but they are beta drivers after all.

no problems ever in the motherboards ive used (only a crap 850i or something but now i have an nforce 3)
any driver
heh... if it runs fine at stock speed and no freezes you cant complain... (also same goes with pipes)

Check my sig ... I only get freezes that last 10 seconds maybe 1 time every other day in a D3D game. Not really too annoying as it does not happen that often. Dunno what the hell they are :p

No problems here with my Asus A8V (Via Chipset) and my XFX 6800 ultra.

I get the problem on my BFG 6800 Ultra OC and K8N Neo Platinum. It only happens in DirectX games and only when Fastwrites is enabled.

The crappy thing is I am not overclocking anything. The 6800 comes overclocked to 425 core, but that should be considered stock and I refuse to drop it back below what is considered normal when I receive it in the box.

All that considered, I have endlessly looked and continue to look for THE solution...

So leave fastwrites disabled. What's the problem? Not like it offers a major speed improvement or anything. Heck, it's something that's been known to cause system instability ever since it was implemented way back when.

I like to use it because it really smoothes out gameplay, particularly on this system.

Also, I have known of Fastwrites troubled pasts, but every single system I have built has run flawlessly with them enabled...until now!

^ If you disable FW .. I bet you will not even notice it in your games with your setup. Its better than crashing is it not? :)

My system freezes much less now that I have done some experimenting. I never had this problem with my KV8 pro (via chipset) with fastwrites enabled. Also it does not seem to happen unless sata drives are in use, my system doesn't freeze if I use an ide drive as my main.

I am getting stuttering in high resolution video, I tried on my 9700pro, and the terminator2 HIGH RES trailer runs like a charm, same processor mobo etc, and the 6800gt stutters like crazy just like games. argh...

Athena

I do not know about the stuttering there are so many reasons a person might get those but as for the 5 to 10 sec freezes I am currently only getting them in Guild Wars Beta so I am not to worried about it.
I have a 6800nu on a NF3 MOBO nothing OC'd at all.

For now, we have 79% NF3 owners who have problems with a 6800 card.
And only 25% with VIA (but only 4 votes so it is not really representative)

Please vote... So we can send it to nvidia if it is representative enough !

I think it is very representative yet. Don't you?
