Most power supplies take a few weeks to burn in...literally. My smelled a bit for almost a couple months I think. Its normal as long as its not too strong.

Some people burn in parts like CPU etc.
Some say you may get higher clocks out
after burn time.

Over at silentpcreview forums there was a very similar thread, but I can't find it. A rep from the manufacturers(who was also a registered forum user) said something along the lines of: every once in a while we come across a batch of PSU's that will do this. He also suggested RMA'ing if the smell doesn't seem to go away over time.

How do u figure it's a bad psu?
My X-Connect rocks brother. No problems here.
Beats the dog sh!t out of my Antec Trueblue 480. :)
I'm seeing the most stable voltage I've ever had on a rig.

My ultra x connect had the most unstable voltages for any rig i have ever built, and my friend also bought one, and after the install he kept getting random reboots. And sometimes it would just power off. When he switched back to that crap chemming 400w psu that came with those cases all the probems went away.

They are made by powmax, they have a reputation for some time for being the "Mother board killers"

Hummm never knew powmax made them.
I agree powmax are JUNK JUNK JUNK.
I've saw 7 powmax PS's burned out
and all were less than 2 months old.

Well, I hope my Ultra keeps kicking. No problem so far.
There reviews are good also.

I'm hoping someone out there could give me some advice.
I'm building comp with the following hardware:
Gigabyte MB GA-K8NXP-SLI
Kingston KHX3200K2/2G Memory Kit
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
BFG 6600 GT PCI Express SLI Ready (installing two cards)
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200 GB SATA/150 16MB (installing 4 with SATAII config)
BenQ DVD R/RW 8.5G double layer
Case: Raidmax Scorpio Series 868 Bought extra fans for a total of 7 fans. (Now here's where it becomes tricky. The case came with RaidMax KY-520TX ATX12V. with 420w output. With all the hardware and GCards installed I was afraid that I would not have enough power so I bought a Ultra 31312 ATX PSU 600w. it has 20 pin my mother board has a 24 pin so I bought the attachement that will convert it to 24 pin to motherboard. I was reading post on this Forum and cases where people had fried their hardware with 600w power supply. Could someone please help....I'm afraid to plug it into wall and fire it up.
Thanks for any input....

That's strange. I had a Powmax 500W PSU in my system for a couple years, never had any problems with it. Then I went over to my Thermaltake 560W and gave the Powmax to a friend. It served him well until there was a fire at his apartment building. His place was totally trashed, his system coated with ash and burned wood. We took apart his system, including the power supply and gave it a thorough cleaning with alcohol and compressed air. The only parts that did not survive were his motherboard and case. The power supply is still working flawlessly.

I have read some pretty nasty reviews of the X-Connect though. Maximum PC completely ripped it a new one, which is funny considering their back page advertisement was for that same PSU.

Well more on the powmax, me and my friend had a very silimar experince.

After i was useing the ultra x, suddenly my hdd would make a large clicking sound, then a reboot would follow, eventually windows woudlnt load. So i though the hdd was dead, got a new one. Then i put it in another system just to be sure, and it worked perfectly fine and still is going to day.

Now, my friend bought an ultra x, to replace a 400w generic chemming. His hdd suddenly started doing a clicking sound and he would get reboots all the time when playing wolfenstein. I told him to swap out the ultra x and put the chemming back in and all his problems went away.

Sorry guys I just dont like the Ultra X's any more, ive sceen them cause way to many werid problems.

Beware. Once I had a PSU which I thought was "burning in" but it was really "burning out". The dangerous thing is that they always take a Hard Disk with them. Or in the worst case, the display adapter.

Most good PSU's have automatic shutoff, so rarely do they damage anything but themselve's. My PC Power and Cooling just bit the bullet the other day.
