This card does not come with a normal s-video/composite tv-out, and they give a cable that fits but its very short, so you will probably need to buy a converter that cant be found in any store because they only come with vivo cards apparently.

This it what it looks like

On the picture there are 3 holes, 2 of them are just the ground.

The rest are luminance, chrominance....

Yea, any cables supplied with anything are too short nowadays.

My friend sent this:

I finally got another card after sending my previous one back and i'm still getting artifacts during 3d Mark03 testing and games.

The new card is an XFX GF6600GT 128mb 500mhz/1000mhz (same as the one i sent back). I have not overclocked or tweaked anything so it's not from any tampering of mine. When i put in my GF4 TI4200 i get slow framerates but no artifacting so i'm ruling out a prob with the cpu or mobo. I don't know if its the brand (XFX) that's causing it because the 2 i've tried are fom the same company (Newegg replaces only with the exact card).

Any help on this would be appreciated.

P.S. I put in extra case fans (with one on the side panel blowing directly on the card) and i plugged in a power dongle to the card. I don think its a heat problem but i could be wrong.

He then sent this.

I think i'm gonna return it for a refund and get the leadtek model.

The only problem is that newegg charges a 15% restock fee for refunds meaning i lose about $31.

Oldmarine: Yeah its the PVT43AND model.

This is very poor service. Does any think he should pay the restocking? This is his 2th card from NewEgg. He has all ready paid shipping two times. Would you try for a third card?

Well, once you buy the card, you should try to deal directly with the card manufacturer to get a resolution on a problem. What kind of correspondence has your friend had with XFX?

Side comment, even if the Ti 4200 works fine, it does not rule out a problem with the motherboard or power supply. The newer GPUs are more demanding and given the limited info here, I can not troubleshoot the problem.

A few things to try.

Take off the case fan, and leave the case open. Make sure the heatsink is getting hot. That verifies the heatsink is making good contact with the GPU.

Next, swapping cards from one generation to the next not the best thing to do. Games and benchmarks can have issues with "remembered" driver information. For instance, I had to delete my Doom3 .cfg when I wnet from the 6000 to the 6800 to get the in-fmae FSAA control panel to work again.

I recommend he searches for the "driver cleaner" and uses as instructed.

Get your friend tro resgister so he can post and answer questiones in the GeForce6 Discussion board in regards to other possibilities and to provide system specs and hardware/software revisions.

Thanks.

BrianG,
I am sorry that I have not replied sooner. He has not gotten a reply from XFX(Pine) as of yet. He e-mailed the last time on 2/30/2005 from their WEB service site. He reformatted his drive and reloaded his OS and driver with each of the two cards and has a 450 w. power supply. When New Egg learned he had not been contacted by XFX on either of the two cards they dropped the restocking fee and offered to refund his shipping. Hooray for New Egg. Thanks for the help BrianG.

Dear Brian & Forum,

Having just purchased the XFX 5500 GT AGP 128Mb Video Card, I must say that I'm very dissapointed with its' performance.

The following games display "artifacts" at all times, making them unplayable:
Far Cry
Thief 3 Deadly Shadows
Deer Hunter 2005
Settlers - Heritage of the King

Having spent many days reviewing the forums for suggestions, I like many other XFX Video Card owners have tried almost everything to try and resolve these "artifact issues".

Do you have any suggestions as to how or when these artifact issues can be resolved?

I have since sent an e-mail to XFX - and am awaiting a response, (will let you know the outcome).

FYI
I'm running a 400W power supply, (and YES have plugged the power into the AGP Card).
Intel P4 2.00Ghz
Jetstar Motherboard
3 x Hard drives

Thanks in advance,
Nick Bala

znxb22,

What driver revision are you using?

Can you describe the artifacts?

What kind of card did you have prior?

Is the performance actually slow, or is it just the image quality?

Apologies for not responding Brian (have been out of town).

XFX were great with their response - they gave me a list of things to try - eventually we found that my BIOS was not detecting the correct AGP speed..... i.e. it kept defaulting to 1x. After manually setting the AGP speed to 4x, the artifacts disappeared.

You may wish to make a mental note that Artifacts can also be caused by AGP BIOS speeds.

Thanks,
NB

Outstanding. We will make that part of the the troubleshooting rundown.

BrianG,
I have a question regarding the XFX 6600GT. I hear people talking about the temperatures that the gpu is running at, how do they get that information? I know that it is available, but has to be enabled in the card bios by the manufacturer. My particular model appears to have it disabled, because it doesn't show up in the nvidia control panel. Have you seen or heard anything about this on certain XFX 6600GT's? I ask because I would like to monitor the temperature of the card with my WC system installed.

I have also seen that there is an nvidia bios mod that is well publicized and documented that allows those with bios disabled temperature sensors to enable them through a bios edit and flash.

I thought I would get someone elses ideas on getting temperature information prior to flashing the bios.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I can't comment on the bios stuff, but you can use 'nvidia-settings' (usr/bin dir of NVIDIA-Linux package) to get gpu temperature.

-(~) nvidia-settings -q GPUCoreTemp
Attribute 'GPUCoreTemp' (jam:0.0): 61.
'GPUCoreTemp' is an integer attribute.
'GPUCoreTemp' is a read-only attribute.

Pretty sure my average temps in the old apartment were ~52i/65l, but my new place is an upper, which is quite a bit warmer when the A/C isn't on.

Just like to say that I've got a different package (but the same card). It's still listed as retail (not OEM), but only contains:
the card
driver CD
quick-installation instructions
some type of video cable (4 pins + a plastic stud one end, 9 the other (the end which fits the card) -- incidentally both ends fit my radeon 9600XT video connector)
and only one DVI-to-VGA convertor.
It also came in a smaller rectangular box. No games, small anoyance.

I've noticed that the XFX site lists entries for this card (PVT43AND) without listing any differences. I think mine is a PVT43ANDF6 from Komplett.co.uk (http://komplett.co.uk/k/kl.asp?bn=10413)

Also my upgrade from my Radeon 9600XT went fine without OS reinstall on both linux and windows. Judging from the reviews I was expecting a higher performance increase, but it's reasonable (quick idea: glxgears gets nearly 7000fps on the GF6600GT, and nearly 4000fps on the R9600XT -- but I think when I first installed the linux drivers for it it got about 2000fps). Actually ATI's buggy OpenGL drivers was the main reason I upgraded... otherwise I liked the R9600XT.

On the downside of the upgrade, multimonitor support is a mixed bag. I do now get xinerama support for linux, but since I have one CRT and one TFT (DVI) connected, the CRT always gets detected as the primary display. On linux this means that most 3D apps won't work properly with my monitor setup using xinerama (I think they would if the secondary monitor was on the right, not the left), and on windows it means that if my CRT is off when windows is booted then both displays are wrongly setup and the computer has to be restarted. With my R9600XT, only the CRT is affected (it's stuck at 60Hz), and going to standby and resuming is enough to correct it.

EDIT: I take back what I said about the performance. I can get better performance than before at 1280x960 with 4xFSAA on HL2 and morrowind (heavily modded with better textures and such). I also tried half-life 2 dual-screen at 2560x1024, which worked alright (without FSAA), but on the other hand I wouldn't play like that, especially since I have different monitors and the picture doesn't line up. I guess an athlon xp 2500+ (@1.91GHz) is the "bottleneck".

excellent review i just purchased one of my very own, cant wait to see the difference between it and my old fx5500.

i would like to suggest you use editing software to brighten up your screenshots. I myself have noticed that all screenshots are darker than they appear when you are playing the game. I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager and my screenshots come out beatiful with a little brightness tweaking, it would certainly boost your review.

thanks
