I guess ATI figured it needed to kick
Nvidia a little harder in the highend arena. "lol"
I bet this new one runs like a PE but they can
bing it to market "store shelf."

Heck with the release of the X800XL ati is looking
good in the midhigh area. The XL looks to beat out the
GT in bang for the buck. With a less than 300 price tag
the XL is going to force Nvida to drop the GT prices or
loose that part of the market.

Dell needs to suck it up and allow others
in the world who do not want there
sh!tty systems to have some cards.
Or maybe ATI just needs to put out
the cards for "Everyone".

-----------------------------------------------

EVEN THOUGH RIALTO should be ready in the next few days, ATI decided to make one more AGP high end chip. We were surprised when we saw a R481 chip listed but it hasn't taken us long to find out more about it.

R481 is a R480, for the Radeon X850 with an AGP interface. ATI won't bridge this chipm it will make it nativem as ATI decided to do native chips as long as it makes sense to do so. We heard this from the ATI CEO back at Computex 2004.

ATI learned that yields on R480, X850 PCIe are much better than on the R420 or R423 chips and decided to make one more AGP part based on R480 marchitecture. ATI had to do two tape outs, one for the already shinily shipping R480 and one for the soon to be shipped R481, as they are different chips. Not too much different, but one chip is native PCIe while the other is native AGP. The rest is similar.

This will be the first time that ATI will be able to ship Radeon X8x0 high end series in quantities, as it failed to bring any decent quantities of R420 based Radeon X800XT PE. Things look better for the X850 AGP, unless Dell buys all R481 based cards one more time.

The R481 chip is expected in February, and cards based on it are likely to be available in March. We should see this one at CeBIT and it already sounds like we will be able to see some nice things at this coming German show. µ

I just read the comparo/review of the X850 PE at Guru3d I'm wondering why it was compared to a 6800Gt and not a 6800 ultra O/C which woulda been more suitable. check it out at.

why AGAIN a new naming scheme... now we have: "XL", pro, XT, XT PE, SE. from which 4 of them are available for the "same" x800 card...

I hope they don't bring out much more of those namings...

So by the time this card is available the R520 will be right over the horizon. Absolutely brilliant.

Not that nvidia is much better though, we have 6800 (NU or Vanilla as it is referred to), 6800 GTO (have only seen this through dell though), Wasnt there a 6800 SE or LE?, 6800 GT, 6800 Ultra and then some other companies come up with the O/C versions so I think it is all the same crap. ATI and Nvidia are both nuts. But I like the products they put out and we all can't find.

Those products from Nvidia were really stop gap products until the 6600 series came out. Which the 6800LE pretty much was replaced by. Of course the 6800NU still exists.

let's see,
for nvidia it's:

6800LE, 6800, 6800GT, 6800ULTRA
6600, 6600GT
6200TC 16/32/64 mb

for ati:
X800, X800 Pro, X800XL, X800XT, X800XT PE
X850 Pro, X850XT, X850XT PE.
X700Pro (X700XT withdrawn)
X600Pro , X600XT
X300SE, X300

can anyone confirm if the list is complete?

6800 GTO also and as I said above there is also all the different manufacturers releasing different speeds of the 6x00 cards just to add to the list. Even though these are not Nvidia's doing they are still out there for us to ponder over. I myself have 2x evga 6800GT PCI Express cards that run at 350/1000 and a BFG 6800GT O/C that runs at 370/1000. Also a Gainward 6800 Ultra Golden Sample which runs at 430/1200 per gainwards performance tool. I know that the BFG and EVGA Ultra AGP cards run at 425/1100.

anyways I wasn't trying to start anything or go too into detail, just simply pointing out that nvidia products are not much better when it comes to the many different versions of the current tech products.

I definately agree that ATI is all over the map though as you said, but when it comes to choosing a 6800 card alone, the options between nvidia models of the 6800 and the different manufacturers all trying to out do one another and offer more on top of just the 6800LE,NU,GTO,GT and Ultra, it isnt much easier to choose one particular card in the end.

Actually the LE and GTO were OEM products only. For Nvidia we have the 6200TC, 6600, 66GT, 6800, 68GT, 68U, 68UE [really nothing more than a card meant to take the air out of the XTPEs launch].

I don't think we should consider what Gainward, Dell, and others are doing as something that relates to Nvidia. NV just makes the chips recall, whereas ATI makes the cards as well [for their BBA brand].

I agree with you about that, but still in the end for the consumer it doesn't make the amount of choices any less which is all my point was. It isn't as easy for someone buying a card as saying I want a 6800 Ultra. Even picking that one card comes with quite a few options other than just brand as they are not all made equal.

It will be good only if ATi can bring it in time . will be a good chance for those missed the X800XT-PE to grab an AGP version of the X850XT-PE without the need to convert to PCI-E systems .

Aye some good points,

However i do question if ATi can get them out (where are the XL's) it seems the current priceing of them seem to indicate they are going to be the next PE in avalibility and priceing.

Also, the price seems to be lowerd for 6800 Ultras, the best deal was 350$ for a brand new BFG 6800 Ultra agp after a 50$ Mail In Rebate.

Some good competition is going to start to happen!
