View Full Version : Is the Quadro FX 4xxx based on 6800 then?

Originally i was about to ask why there seem to be no Quadro cards based off the 6800 line. But looking closer at the FX 4400 revealed Shader Model 3.0 support so i guess thats the 6800 GPU powering that then.
I'm not after one (well i am but i could never afford it ;)) but i was just wondering why NVIDIA kept the FX in the name when they removed it from the latest GeForce - for what i thought was an attempt to say it was nothing to do with the FX line heh.

While the GeForce FX wasn't great compared to what else was available (Radeon 9500 and up), the same wasn't true for Quadro's. While NV3x is pretty slow with DX9 pixel shading, ATI doesn't spend nearly as much time on drivers for FireGL as they do for Radeons. Unless you're doing a lot of DX9 pixel shading, NV3x is still a pretty fast chip, so I doubt it ever had quite the same stigma in the professional market as it did with gamers.

yep, Quadro 4400 PCIe is NV45 material, but if they're releasing a 512MB ram version is uncertain. (review on hexus.net pretty soon i guess)

The Quadro FX 3400 and 4400 are based on the NV45 GPU, quadro FX 3400/4400 are NV45GL. I wouldnt mind having a 4400 myself. but for $2K USD, i dont think so. Also, the Quadros arent clocked as fast as GF because they do hardware OpenGL and hardware Antialiasing, ETC. Geforce's do it by the driver. So you can play games with quadro's just as well and also do graphics design.
Dell Precision WorkStation 670 Series
Quadro FX 3400, 256MB
2GB DDR2 RAM
15K RPM Cheetah w/ 73GB storage
Ditto that; never really had problems playing games with either of my Quadro cards listed below.

huh? aren't those the same thing?
No, there are some differences apparently between a NVXX and NVXXGL card. Some little hardware things that well us normals don't notice or need but pro guys need.

NV45 and NV45GL are different. They are not the same.

I had a discussion with the RivaTuner author regarding hardware differences for current (e.g. NV4xGL) Workstation cards. I argued vehemently that Quadro hardware was different than the GeForce, due to bonding options, and could never be replicated by BIOS/Driver/Strapping options in a GeForfce card.
However, RobHague has a thread on this board in which he used RivaTuner on his GeForce 6800 and nearly duplicated the Quadro benchmarks.. It appears in real world applications that the NV4xGL moniker is all decorative. The RivaTuner guy believes and demonstrates that moving the NV4x to so much programmable functionality, BIOS and strapping options become irrelevant, and the old GL hardware bonding options no longer control the Quadro feature set the way they did for NV2x and NV3x.
