Hi I recently sold my BFG 6800 and am looking to buy the cheapest graphics card that will run 1280x960 at 100hz (my default resolution). There will be absolutely no gaming on this machine whatsoever. I just got a new job and have decided to focus on writing code at home then playing games.

I want to spend $10-$40

The rest of my system is as follows:

Athlon 64 3000+
1 gig kingston ddr 3200 valueram
Abit Kv8Pro motherboard

thanks so much,

Jeff

Just go with a standard Geforce 5200. Great for everything but games :)

Is it true that Longhorn will have high requirements for the video card?

Yes hardware ps2.0 at least!
Well u can run it with softps2, but your menus etc will be quite slow! :D

Matrox cards are still some of the best for strictly 2D usage but I doubt that you'll find one in your price range. I'd go with a 5200 like Jakup suggested.

What about an mx4000 i can get one for around $30 on newegg.

Also a radeon 7000 i can get for $25.

between those two, definitely mx4000, its a Geforce 4Mx440, which alright. But I just bought a 5200 for 35$ (50$CAN).

I don't think the 7000 even has TnL. And since you said: "write code", maybe you'd like some easy Linux compatibility, wink wink, Nvidia,

Either of those should be more than adequate for typical 2D needs. If dual monitor support is important then you may want to look closer at each (I'm not sure that either of those have dual RAMDACs).

Id say both of those cards are fine for 2d!

However you could still consider a matrox card, i found a brand new one at a local computer store for 30$ it was a g400, the guy didnt even know what it was so i talked him down to 25.

Nice bartering. :D I have the G450 in one of my machines at work with dual monitors. Matrox did dual RAMDACs earlier and better than anyone else.
