A friend of mine is having a problem with her Windows XP.
She was connected to internet (ADSL), disconnected and couldn't connect again. She's getting the "Error 769" message.
Searching, I found it is related to a problem with the NIC card, but her modem is USB! So this is not the case (I don't remember if she has an onboard NIC or not, but she doesn't use it anyway).
When I go to My network places properties, there's no connections! But, in Internet Options, in the Connections tab, they appear! (She has some old dialup connections as well).
So I try to make a new connection (ADSL or dialup), and if I use the same name of a previous connection, Windows says it already exists. So I make a new one with a unique name, and it appears in the connection list. :) But... I press F5 and it's gone!! :(
So there's a problem there... all connections disappear!
Could it be a virus? Ugly spyware? Hack attack?
She reinstalled XP over the actual installation, but didn't fix it. We are planning to reformat, if necessary (she has several users, for all her family, so it would be nice if we can avoid reformatting).

I fixed the connection disappearing problem, just uninstalled all network drivers (an onboard NIC, and iVision and ZyXEL drivers), reinstalled, and there they are! All connections made are here again. :) But the 769 problem still remains... :(
We'll keep trying uninstalling everything connection-related.
