Say money was not an issue (well .. within reason). What would your computer be (and computer only .. no monitors .. etc.)? In other words .. give me the specs you would love to have. Motherboard .. CPU... video card(s) .. ram .. hard drive(s)... etc. Go all out on what you want that not only fits your needs but are also some of the best parts money can buy ;)

4 74gig raptors would be limited by the 150m/sec bandwidth limit of Sata1

I would go 4 36gig's (wich is just under) then ad a 250-300gig storage drive.

But man, 4 36GB drives is just so...pathetically small for the amount of space taken up and the heat generated...not to mention the money they would cost.

I'd almost rather just get 5 400GB drives.

The 74gb raptors have lower seek times though.

Does it make that big of a difference though?

Oh, and I would make a 1.5GB partition on the memory and install Windows there...my computer would never be powered off and would have no less than 10 redundancy power supplies. This way, there would be no way for there to be a power failure that would cause me to lose Windows...and since Windows would be installed on the memory, it would be LIGHTNING fast.

Speaking of lightning fast, I swear, a few months ago I heard about some PC manufacturer that was selling machines with 120GB Flash memory drives as the harddrives...the drives were about $2k/ea, but did anyone else hear about those?

P4 EE 3.4Ghz
Asus P5AD2-E Premium
2Gig of 667 DDR2
BFG 6800Ultra OC PCI-E
Audigy 4
I would run Raid 0 with
the fastest harddrives out.
PC Power and Cooling 600 watt+
Dual DVD Burners

I would use the Koolance PC3-720BK water cooled
case. Both the CPU and Videocard would be H2O cooled.

Plus UV fans and lighting is a must. "lol"

For "Me" this would be the best.
But I'm not a full time gamer so
I went with the P4EE over the FX55.
To each his own I guess.

If money was no object.......I still wouldn't go SLI :thumbdwn:

Let the flames rip, but imo SLI is a farce ....at least as it stands today in nVidias implimentation.

MB: Tyan Dual Opteron SLI Board
CPU: 2 x Fastest Opteron Procs out at the time (SSE3 stepping)
Video: 2 x 6800U (maybe a 3Dlabs Wildcat Realizm 800 (just for kicks))
RAM: 16GB (run everything off a RAM disc)
HDD: MB comes with SCSI so it would be 15k RPM SCSI HDs probably running RAID5 (1TB should be enough to get me started – run CD/DVDs I use off the HDD as virtual drives)
Case: Large file server tower (plenty of room to work (lots of quiet fans))
Optical: NEC DL DVD drive
Monitor: FD Trinitron CRT 19" (maybe a Widescreen TFT running as a secondary monitor (for gaming and watching films))
Cooling: Some kind of phase change kit (don’t plan to overclock – just for added stability/reliability)
Other1: A DVB-T/DAB tuner card for watching tv/listening to the radio and capturing.
Other2: An MPEG2+MPEG4/XVID/WMV9 encoder/decoder card.

My birthday is coming up soon so you guys better start saving now. :p

hahahaha...NEVER! :)

It seems like such a good idea, but it's not possible. Sigh.

I really would love to get one of those huge Flash-based HDDs...those would be LIGHTNING quick.

I've been thinking about it and a quad-Xeon 3.2GHz w/HT and 32GB RAM with a 6800U wouldn't be too bad, either...

You could run it all off a VM. With a multi CPU setup with unlimited RAM you can possibly setup a bunch of VMs with a limited performance hit.

It's annoying that Windows makes you restart for so many different reasons. Can't remember but if D3/HL2 doesn't require a restart you might be able to install them onto the RAM disc (either way it shouldn't be too hard to run programs/games off a RAM disc-the hardest part might be keeping track of the drive letter references). That should help cut down the loading times. :D

Now you're just getting greedy. Like you're ever going to need four procs. :p ;)

Probably woudlnt be too good for gaming, especially that ram, your probably gonna need ECC ram which is incredibly slow.

Who DOESN'T need 4 processors and enough RAM for a small third world country?
