The story (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/25/samsung_ships_xdr/)

The devices transfer data at eight bits per clock cycle yielding 8GBps, ten times faster than 400MHz DDR SDRAM. They also incorporate Rambus' Differential Rambus Signal Level (DRSL) technology, Samsung said.

XDR could be used in PS3, but, maybe next gen GPUs can be paired with XDR ram as they seem to be more bandwidth capaable than todays' GDDR, GDDR2 GDDR3 etc. Just a thought.

I was wondering what had happened to this stuff...it had been months since I heard anything about it.

Seems a little too quiet, its either well protected under NDA or not got the ground support it needs to be seen anytime soon.

The main thing as DSC pointed out in IRC is that XDR is RAMBUS's baby and a lot of memory manufacturers are still seething or in litigation with RAMBUS. If licensing this tech can be sorted out then we could possibly see other memory makers besides Samsung selling XDR memory.

Its entered Mass production:

Linkage: http://www.iexbeta.com/

Samsung has started mass production of their new 256Mb XDR (eXtreme Data Rate) DRAM. This memory is being dubbed by Samsung as the world's fastest. It's a staggering 10 times faster than DDR-SDRAM memory and five times faster than RDRAM.

Created for multimedia applications, the new memory is geared towards users with thirsty applications that require fast memory to process lots of data.

To transfer data in a stable manner at these incredibly high speeds, Samsung is using Differential Rambus Signal Level technology.

"XDR technology has tremendous potential to become a leading memory solution for today's highest-performance multimedia applications and we're quite enthusiastic about its prospects," said Mueez Deen, marketing director, of Samsung Electronics Co.

great.. just what we need.. more "eXtreme" and Xes..
MOVE ON ALREADY

Anyhow, if this XDR proves fast cool and have low enough power usage, it might find its way onto video cards I guess..
if it can do high clocks with low latancy, AMD might pick it up for future A64..
