nv50 was cancelled, so they dont have any other choice....right?

It's supposed to be custom GPU that Sony wnats tailor made, mostly a hybrid between, nv47-nv50 and Sony features. NV50 was cancelled (as a release GPU) but the tech is still there, Nv have think IIRC 3 GPU designs running at the same time (running at different time frames and compeletion stage), right now it could be conceivable that even the NV70 could be early design process by now etc.

Indeed PS3 GPU is a custom Nvidia chipset that will have both NV40 and next generation NV50 technologies, Sony will announce about PS3 in March 2005 (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20050128112857.html) and it probably will show off PS3 running tech demos.

I think that NV-50 was not cancelled but moved to Sony PS3 and now they have to come up with another NV-5X # spec's for the PC... maybe like NV-52 the new spec for GeForce 7 :D

And as for nv-47/nv-48 chips, in all 65xx and 70xx drivers all ready have NV-48 code in them and that Nvidia is going to show off next month at CeBIT 2005 http://www.cebit.de/homepage_e?x=1 has for the specs of the NV-48 are still unclear but may look like this?

What ever NV- 5X # they will use in the Sony PS3 it will be for sure a GeForce 7 Tech (DirectX - 10a & OpenGL 2.0) Spec's + SM 4.0 and also 12 Hardware Vertex Shaders and more so 32 pipe, 65 nm, 64MB of XDR RAM & HDTV format (1080p/1080i) suport too :D
