Well I know theres a thread on how to install Graphics drivers... However I simply cant understand it! I've literally never seen Linux before a ew days ago, I just found out about the four desktop like things, and im still working small things out... PLEASE can some one help, Im trying to install a GeForce 4 GO in The Madrake 8.2 OS(I presume its the same as other Linux's) I have no odea what this Xfree config thing is. I have no idea! I've tried this thread before, I got refered to another with lots of stuff about Some X free thing:confused:
ok I hear you.
Here's a few links to websites that got me started. I'm fairly new to the world of linux myself and a lot of stuff gets learnd by brute force and bloody ignorance.
Some basic commands at http://jgo.local.net/LinuxGuide/linux-commands.html and www.frankenlinux.com/guides/commands.html
My distro is a debian so you might want to check out mandrakes website for this stuff but most of it will be the same: www.debian.org/doc/manuals/
www.xfree86.org should tell you all you need to know about that.
It'd be worth concentrating on learning how to use the command prompt coz that's where you'll be installing drivers etc. and then some of the threads here will probably start making sense.
If you don't know how to use a command, type -h or --help after it to get info on what it does, correct syntax etc. If you're using a program/utility e.g. rpm, tar, XFree86 etc. type man before the name to get an on screen manual on how to use it.
And then try stuff. The best way to learn is by doing. Coming to forums and asking for help is a waste of time if you haven't exhausted all other possibilities first. Plus you look a bit stupid :D
After all, if you do **** up the worst that can happen is having to re-install, which isn't really a problem if you've only been on for a week.
Well that should get you started. I hope it helps. Let me know how you get on ;)
