Faster then a 4600TI..

How much do you need to pay for a card that's a bit faster then a 4600TI. My fan is dying on that card and I could use DX9 support. Is like a 5500 really faster? Maybe a cheap 9800 is out there?

Any ideas? I do want a card that is just as fast at DX8 though. The 4600 is faster then people realize, IMHO.

If you want something that'll last you a while, the GeForce 6600 GT AGP can be had for about $200-210. If you want an interim upgrade before moving on to PCI-Express in a couple months, a 9800 Pro will work as well. Those can be had for probably in the $150-180 range if you know where to look. I'd still take the 6600 GT, though.

If you want a good "future-proof" card that will support (maybe not run at top resolutions) all games in the future like AOE III and Unreal 3, get the 6600GT. Games that really take advantage of SM3.0 are right around the corner, and you will be glad you spent the extra $50 for a 6600GT when the these games come out.

Your Ti4600 utterly crushes the FX5500 in raw speed.. I shouldn't choose that card..

You're right here.. a Ti4600 is a very strong card and still have some kick left. Although it doesn't support DX9 features.. Going for a cheap 9800 (Pro) is a good option. nice increase in overall speed/features.

But like the most ppl say. If you can afford a 6600GT you should do it. Those cards really pack a punch.

The TI series in general was probably when of the greatests lines of video cards from Nvidia. My gf now runs my old TI4600 and it still runs rock solid. I would go with the 6800 Vanilla cuz it's only like $50 bux more over the 6600gt I believe. Do it for the extra pipes and better clock speeds, and so you can just say that you have a 6800 series Nvidia card ;) wo0t!

Get a 6600GT AGP for $199

No contest, this is the very best card for the money. Outperforms the GF4TI, the FX5900, and even the R9800Pro.

Right now for the cash and performance there is no last generation card I would recommend over the 6600 GT. If you are an ATI fan and don't mind waiting, plus paying more, I'd wait on the X800XL to come out in AGP. That is even if it will. *shrug*

On a side note, yes the 4600 was a fast card. I was able to play Far Cry with one at 800x600 all very high detail with 4xAF. Which isn't too bad all things considered.

My old peace of crap 4200 has DX9 support. hmm. well i cant say my card is a peace of junk.It can play Farcry at med. graghics with hardly any jumping or glitches.Any way if your lookin for somethin cheap like i am. I would go for a 5700 Xt or 5900.Or go for the ATI 9700 pro or 9800. I'v seen them all over ebay, pricewatch,Xtremegear,PCmal,zipzoomfly,tigerdirect ,ect.

You can play DX9 games on a GF4 Ti, but you will not see any DX9 effects like Pixel and Vertex Shader 2.0. The 4200-4600s support only DX8.0 with Pixel Shader 1.1 and 1.3, but only 1.1 for the most part since there's pretty much no games with 1.3 and it's nothing special anyway.

Anyway, if you want a new card, the least you should go for is a 6600gt. I'd go for a cheap 6800nu if it were up to me.

There is a difference between being Dx9 compatible and being Dx9 compliant.

This turns out not to be the case. The NV25 and NV28, aka GeForce4 Ti4x00, have no DX9 support. DX9 support started in the NVIDIA line up with the NV30.

Best bang for your buck on a card which will be faster than a Ti4600 is the Geforce 6600 GT, get either the XFX of the BFG versions. Also the Geforce 6600 GT blows away the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO and Matches and even Beats the 9800XT all for a much better price. Monarch Computers, and Newegg.com are great places to shop for them. For now though Newegg.com has the XFX 6600 GT for $199 Retail Box. Hope this helps.

For that price you could probably get a 9700 pro which is twice the card
