I'll tell you which 9700 used to be in my system.

Built by ATI Radeon 9700 retail

Driver version(s) - 6193 and whatever came on the CD, I don't remember

Highest stable OC - Never tried because I returned the card

Mobo - Abit KR7A-RAID (b5 BIOS)

CPU - AthlonXP 1800+ @ 1610 MHz

RAM - 2x256 PC2400 OCZ DDR

Card couldn't properly render my OpenGL games (ie dynamic lights shining through walls) and no FSAA in 16-bit made me put my Ti4600 back in my system.

Saturn,

Seems like you had a bad experience eh?

Possibly a faulty card, doesnt mean every card is like it.

Maybe you could have asked for a replacement???

Oni was by far the biggest offender. It was also present in Half-Life and the original Unreal Tournament to a lesser degree. All was fine when I put my Ti4600 back in.

Thing is, the problem seemed to be worse with the 6193 drivers than with the ones that came on the CD if you can believe that. But I couldn't use the drivers on the CD because my EA racing games would lockup. At least I could play those games with the newer drivers. It's like I can't win with an ATI card in my system. My 8500 did the same thing - one set of drivers worked fine for some games but were bad for others.

I will grant that sometimes this has happened with my NVIDIA cards, but not to nearly the scale of my ATI experience. The 41.03 detonator drivers I'm using now are about the most polished NVIDIA drivers to date. I have no problems running games quickly and stabily.

It was just as well I returned the card because I had to pay off my biennial car insurance bill and I'm also facing a potential car repair tomorrow. Therefore I have no immediate plans to change the card or anything else in my system for that matter.

Such is life for the cash-strapped geek.

It wouldn't have been a big deal if Oni was the only offender. But it wasn't, so back it went.

Though I may reconsider because my car didn't in fact need to be repaired. We'll see which way the wind blows...:D

i've had 2. Saphire Atlantis 9700 Pro & A built by 9700 Pro. I can honestly say the saphire one is better. It's also a newer revision though :o

Saphire: 370/350
ATi: 380/335

Both used in an Abit IT7 max with 512 Cosair XMS Pc3500 and a 2.4b @ 3ghz. Can honestly say it's been rock solid. Finishing up my watercooling tonight though, hoping to get 400 outa the core on saphire.

Does the new Rev. 3 board look like it's still built by ATi, or does it look like a Saphire design?

heh. It looks alittle diffrent. The PCB is a better red and there's a few more circuits on it and such. Also, the heatspreader on the back is anodized red/pink instead of silver. That's about it.

Well... I guess what I was really asking is do you think it was still made by ATi (just a new revision) or a true Saphire design, like some of the obviously different Gigabyte and Tyan versions we've seen pics of. Of course, I don't expect you to be able to really know that, cause I probably wouldn't just looking at it.

I guess we'll have to wait until more rev 3 boards show up that are straight from ATi to compare.
