Midway Grabs Unreal Engine 3
The next generation is that much closer.
By David Adams
February 2, 2005 - The next generation of Midway titles will be built using Epic's Unreal Engine 3, as Midway announced today a multi-year licensing agreement to use the cutting-edge development software.

Midway plans to use Epic's advanced gaming engine not only to expand its PC game development, but for production of titles for upcoming hardware like the PS3 and Xbox Next.

Unreal Engine 3 is already in use at Midway's primary studios, which include Midway's Chicago studio, the makers of NBA Ballers and the Mortal Kombat series; the Austin studio, developers of Area 51; and Surreal Software, creators of The Suffering.

Midway has yet to announce specific next-gen projects.

"Great next generation games will be defined by how far they push the envelope in terms of graphical prowess, evolved artificial intelligence and revolutionary online functionality beyond what gamers are currently experiencing," said Midway president and CEO David F. Zucker. "Our obtaining the use of Unreal Engine 3 empowers us to begin today to produce great next generation content. Our internal studios are already in the process of creating incredible products with the Unreal Engine 3 technology in multiple genres."

Epic Games, creators of the acclaimed Unreal Tournament series, created Unreal Engine 3 specifically for advanced PC gaming and next-generation console hardware. The engine supports multiple processors, advanced pipelines, and incredibly high-detail visuals. Check out the technical details at the official site.

Keep your eyes here for more next-gen announcements.

So that means both Midway and Bioware have jumped on the UE3 boat.

And I wish my name was as bad ass as David F. Zucker.
