I'm not sure if I'll be doing this myself, but I think this is a pretty good deal if anyone's looking to get a hard drive for either backup storage or to install Linux on or something.

Best Buy has retail boxed Maxtor 40 gig 5400 RPM drives for $79.99 and they're offering a $30 rebate on them. The rebate is mail-in which might scare you, but if you send in all the required pieces by registered mail with a return receipt you shouldn't have a problem.

$50 for 40 gigs sounds pretty sweet if you ask me. :)

Good info. Best Buy usually is good on rebates. I just upgraded to a 120GB drive, so I don't need another just yet. Plus I have a bunch of 40 & 60 GB 7200 rpm drives laying around the 'puter room. But I appreciate people sharing tips on hot deals. Thanks!:)

Care to send one of those my way, hehe. :)

I know for a lot of us money can be tight and this sounds like a bargain. Yeah, it's only 5400 RPM, but I think it would be perfect for storing some DivX movies or Mp3's or anything like that.
