View Full Version : Longhorn Beta in June
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+Longhorn+beta+will+arrive+by+June/2100-1012_3-5566423.html?tag=nefd.lede
Microsoft has not talked a great deal about what features will be part of the beta release. Montgomery said many of the updates have to do with improving the "operational characteristics" of the operating system--basically making Windows easier to manage and more reliable. Among the changes will be a new model for drivers--the bits of code that allow Windows to work effectively with hardware add-ons such as graphic cards and peripherals.
I dont know about Longhorn, I mean I love Windows XP it is still working great and dont have any problems with it.
Hang on is Longhorn 64 bit etc ready?

Screw Longhorn, I'd like to have an RTM version of WinXP 64-bit by at least 2008 :rolleyes2
What???! Not 64 bit?? I don't understand, I thought 64 bit was the future for O.S.'s... Well I assume there will be a 64 bit version also.

Yes, it would be a dream come true in 2006 to see rapid deployment of Windows Longhorn, but its just not going to happen! Some companies have just moved off either Windows NT or Windows 9x to 2000 and do not see any significant changes in Windows XP [...] take a good look at Longhorn and migrate to it in 2006 or 2007; the most obvious is 64 Bit. Companys can thrive on the ability to gain more power for their networks and less hassle for transition in areas such as application compatibility.

Wow, yeah...I, too, was under the impression that Longhorn was 64-bit only.
I kinda like the Longhorn name...I hope that they keep it around as the official Windows version name. But I doubt they will. :(

As you'll notice from my post, Longhorn name is only used in the beta 1...

What?
Longhorn is the development codename for the new version of Windows, just like Whistler was what XP was called during development. All I'm saying is that I've come to like the Longhorn name and I hope/wish MS keeps it as the official name of the new version of Windows.

I'm not arguing,
I too like the longhorn name, however, the final windows name seems to be:
Windows 2006 successor to Windows XP
Windows Server 2007 successor to Windows Server 2003
Both are from Longhorn Beta1.

Okay, I know that...I don't get what you're getting at though.
XP successor: Windows Longhorn
Server 2004 Successor: Windows Server 2007 Longhorn

And I've still got a XT 4.77Mhx running Windows 3.1 on a CGA screen and did you know you can run Windows 95 on a CGA screen!

I just meant that it seemed pretty obvious that they would drop the Longhorn name after the first beta. Since we actually agree with each other but don't speak the same language, what say you I stop beating this dead horse :)?
